Liga - 'Shameful' Pepe under fire after Messi stamp
The normally loyal Madrid-based sports papers rounded on Pepe after the Real Madrid defender stamped on Lionel Messi's hand during Wednesday's Copa del Rey quarter-final first leg defeat by Barcelona.
The behaviour of the Portuguese international, who was playing in an unfamiliar central midfield role, was "shameful" and "intolerable", Marca wrote in an opinion piece, while As columnist Luis Nieto said he deserved "general condemnation" and should be punished.
Television replays showed that Pepe, already booked for a late tackle on
His theatrical reaction after tangling with
"Violent, with excessive aggression, play-acting and a long way from what the behaviour of a footballer in a high-level match should be," Marca wrote.
"What's more, his problem is that he is a repeat offender," the paper added, recalling an incident during the 2008-09 season when Pepe kicked Getafe's Francisco Casquero while he was on the ground, an action that earned the Portuguese a 10-match ban.
"The Casquero episode cannot now be seen as an isolated one but instead must be viewed as the sad reality of a player who goes beyond over-excited.
"Pepe might be an excellent person away from the pitch - and he is - but someone urgently needs to make him reflect and help him to correct these shameful actions."
The 28-year-old published a brief statement on the club website (www.realmadrid.com) later on Thursday saying he had not meant to stamp on Messi and it had been unintentional.
"I nevertheless want to apologise to him if he was offended because all I do is defend my team and this institution," he added. "I give my heart and soul and the thought of hurting a colleague has never entered my mind."
Barca centre back
"If they believe that the action went beyond the limit of what should happen on the pitch they are the ones who have to take it forward," the
"I don't believe that we as a club should be going and asking for a player to be punished."
A spokesman for the Spanish football federation, which organises the Copa del Rey, said they had no comment.
The outcry over Pepe's behaviour deflected some of the attention away from Real's latest failure against Barca, who host their arch-rivals in the second leg on Wednesday.
The Spanish and European champions' victory was coach Pep Guardiola's ninth win in 13 'Clasicos' since he took the helm in 2008 and came on his 41st birthday.
His only reverse was in last year's Copa del Rey final, when
Real coach Jose Mourinho, who told a news conference Pepe should be punished if the stamp on Messi was deliberate, was also subjected to severe criticism in Marca and As.
The former Inter Milan and
"Mourinho's latest pirouette was his worst," Marca's Santiago Segurola added.
"Spanish football has seen many teams with far fewer resources who have made life more difficult for Barca. And with greater nobility."
Real's next game is a La Liga clash at home to Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.

this guy should not go scott free.
It is now obvious that spanish media are the laziest in the world. So they are still peddling the Pepe stuff. They wouldn't find another thing to report. Spain shame to you and your media. It is only a question of time you people will be all alone. You have used racism to pursue all African players from your league, now you want other fellow Europeans to leave. Shame unto you barbaric spain.
pepe doit etre puni
Pepe must be punished...messi is a hero with or without, you have to know that...Barca for life.
Now is Barcas turn and they are doing it in a style never seen before, good . If Real wan to beat Barcelona they will have to change their aproach, their coach, and physical trainers.and be real on pitch! For pepe grow up!!!
This forum in now in 9ja cabba, lol!!!
Real Madrid players are jealous with Messi. They showed it that night obviously!
i respected messi alot cause even when pepe stepped on his finger he never said anything...messi he so humble and easy going person unlike most madrid player who like to create a scene on the pitch.
Berca for lyf
Pepe or pepper deserve a bullet shot on his legs to be out of pitch for the rest of his life, he is not a footballer but a rebel fighter on the pitch.
Alonzo Xabi saw what he did to Messi that is why he rush up to cover up because he deserve to be sent out for that shameful act, foolish goat like i feel getting him in my arms and put him where he deserve to be.
What really hurting Barca is the match ended without any Red Card or any ban to Madrid Players thats the reason they r making so much of noise....Pepe is a respected player in Madrid & we do really support him!!!!
HEY, ITS ALL ABOUT THE GAME. STOP BEING SANCTIMONIOUS AND BE REAL. PEPE IS OK. I'M NO FAN FOR REAL BUT THE COMMENTS MARCA ARE TOO ARCHAIC.
Pepe is scum why hell does play for club of Real Madrid stature
i think that PEPE has no thing to do with playing football. He should be a farmer, living in a jungle is adequate for him.
Pepe rules! has it been on purpose Pepe would stamp Messi's leg, not his hand so he couldn't play
am a strong Barca fan. But I don't think the actions of players like Pepe and Marcello is a reflection of the whole Madrid Team who has class acts like Kaka, Ronaldo, Casilas, Olonso, Ozil and many others. What I do think very troubling though is the extent coaches and executives (not only at Madrid) are always defending their players even when they are clearly wrong, just like what happened at Liverpool recently. I think this is the trend that we should be concerned about. Zidane comments today defending Pepe are shameful. Pepe was clearly intentional, he is a repeat offender, and just because he is a nice guy off the field, that does not give him the right to injure other players. Executives and coaches should protect their players by counseling them and holding them responsible but not by encouraging them like what Madrid executive are currently doing.
if you cant beat the best step on them, shameless Real!! there is only one champion. Barca in the Team of the moment, face it Jose and swallow your folish pride.
You have to play dirty against the dirtiest and corrupted team in the world called Barca. Pepe did great, what he did is nothing to what Barca did to many teams by playing diving and cheating, the last CL wins a completely dirty and won not on the pitch, they are all decided on the table.....Real M lost the game, but they lost with pride.....
The man (pepe) is a GUTLESS MORAN ANOTHER CALL FOR CAMERAS and get shut of the SCUM in FOOTBALL
the fact that pepe did not apologize(which he should have).....does not conclude that it was on purpose.....unless you want to see it that way.....maybe he was confused and expecting a red card and decided to walk away....which we player doing sometimes......i repeat the position messi was in can make anyone make such a mistake......coz it has happened to me bfore....my sister was sitting with her hands behhind her finger on the floor.....and i steped on them in a almost similar situation(of course i apologised to her).....all i want to say is its very possible not to see the finger on the floor when walking head up.....real for life
