Dons secure TV deal for Euro tie

Tue 19 Feb, 03:45 PM

Aberdeen fans will now be able to watch Thursday's UEFA Cup tie away to Bayern Munich after striking a television deal. The club joined forces with Setanta to reach an arrangement with Bayern Munich general manager Uli Hoeness to screen the second leg of the third round clash from Germany.

Aberdeen managing director Duncan Fraser said: "At the close of business last night, it really looked dead in the water as far as television coverage is concerned.

"However, we made one last effort and I'm delighted that Bayern, thanks to the personal intervention of Uli Hoeness, gave us the go ahead.

"He reduced Bayern's fee to a level whereby, with a not insubstantial financial contribution from ourselves, Setanta were in a position where they felt, from a public broadcasting perspective, it was important to show it."

Aberdeen earned a 2-2 draw in the first leg at Pittodrie last week and Fraser added: "This is the Dons' most important match for many years and we are delighted that an agreement has now been reached whereby everyone who wants to see the game should be able to do so."
