Late Seagulls rally sees off Robins

Tue 19 Feb, 10:45 PM

Brighton scored twice in the final 10 minutes to earn a 2-1 win over Cheltenham in League One on Tuesday in front of a sparse Withdean crowd. The crowd of 4,395 was the lowest-ever league attendance at the Withdean Stadium.

Striker Steve Brooker had given relegation-threatened Cheltenham the lead after only three minutes by registering his first goal for the club from 20 yards.

Brighton keeper Michel Kuipers prevented Steve Gillespie from doubling Cheltenham's advantage with a superb save on 25 minutes before defender Alan Wright was only inches off target with a fierce drive from 35 yards.

Striker Glenn Murray almost pulled the Seagulls level by lobbing keeper Shane Higgs from eight yards, but the ball rebounded off the bar after Nicky Forster set up the chance.

But Murray levelled on 80 minutes when he followed in a long-ball from Joel Lynch and finished well.

And two minutes before the final whistle it was Lynch who grabbed the winner with a scrappy effort which was given on the say-so of assistant referee Marvin Thompson.

Brighton move up to 14th in the table, seven points from the play-off zone with two games in hand over sixth-placed Walsall. Cheltenham stay 18th, three points above the drop zone.
