Strachan: Bhoys can test Barca

Tue 19 Feb, 06:15 PM

Celtic boss Gordon Strachan insists he is "relaxed" about the loss of suspended Scott Brown ahead of the Champions League visit of Barcelona.Brown is suspended for the last-16 first-leg visit of the Catalan giants on Wednesday and Strachan has to figure out who will replace the former Hibernian midfielder with Evander Sno and Barry Robson in the frame.

But the Celtic boss claims his side's fine recent form - the Hoops have scored 13 goals in their last three games to extend their winning run to eight games - has eased his worries.

Strachan said: "The performances of people who have come on as substitute, just as Sno, Barry Robson and Georgios Samaras has made me more relaxed.

"I would love to have all my top players available but it is not possible.

"But everyone in the squad has been involved recently and they must be pleased with their individual performances and the team's performances."

Much has been made of the quality of Barca's squad ahead of their trip to Glasgow.

The Catalan giants flew in on Tuesday afternoon with all their big-name stars including their 'fantastic four' -Samuel Eto'o, Ronaldinho, Lionel Messi and Thierry Henry.

Barcelona are the only team to win at Celtic Park in the Champions League when former Celtic hero Henrik Larsson scored in a 3-1 win in September 2004.

But Strachan preferred to focus on his side's impressive home record in Europe since that defeat.

The Hoops have gone 11 games unbeaten against sides like Manchester United and AC Milan and the manager said: "We have played against good players before.

"We have played against Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Andrea Pirlo, so there have been great players coming here for the last few years and somehow we have managed to handle it.

"There are load of good teams in Europe and they are definitely up there with the best, that's for sure.

"Some weeks Barcelona are the best, some weeks it is Real Madrid, some weeks it is Manchester United. But the champions are AC Milan.

"Our training has not been based 100% on how we stop Barcelona.

"It's 50-50 on what we do when we have got the ball and what they do when they have got the ball.

"We are respectful of great players but we don't really fear anybody.

"We are really excited and we are looking forward to it."
