US Open gives players more call challenges

NEW YORK (AFP) - Players at this year's US Open will have an extra chance to challenge a call during each set of the season's final Grand Slam tournament, the US Tennis Association announced Wednesday.

The change means that each player will be allowed up to three incorrect challenges of calls in a set with an additional challenge granted for a tie-breaker.

The previous maximum was two incorrect challenges per set plus another in a tie-breaker.

"Electronic line calling, with its player challenge system, has been one of the most widely-acclaimed initiatives in tennis," US Open tournament director Jim Curley said.

"With an additional challenge per set, we look forward to the review being used more frequently at this year's US Open."

US tuneup events for the US Open will also use three challenges for each set, the USTA said.

In 2006, the US Open became the first Grand Slam event to use electronic technology to allow reviews of line calls.

Last year, players challenged a total of 320 calls at the US Open with 95 of them, 30.6 percent, overturned.
