Bhoys go top after dinging Dons

Sat 19 Apr, 05:45 PM

Celtic moved top of the SPL table following a 1-0 win over Aberdeen, while Hearts earned a thrilling 3-2 victory over St Mirren at Tynecastle.Georgios Samaras grabbed the only goal of the game against Aberdeen to allow Celtic to move into pole position in the SPL for the first time since January.

The striker may have had a dreadful game but proved to be the difference at Parkhead as both teams served up a poor match which failed to match an exhilarating 90 minutes against Rangers at the same venue 72 hours earlier.

Regardless of the spectacle, the win allowed Celtic to move two points clear at the summit, albeit title challengers Rangers - in Scottish Cup action on Sunday - now have three games in hand.

Hearts midfielder Laryea Kingston notched a superb free-kick to give the hosts all three points in a 3-2 victory over St Mirren.

The Ghana international found the net 10 minutes from time to seal the win.

Ryan McCay gave the visitors the lead in the 20th minute before Eggert Jonsson and Gary Glen ensured Hearts went in at the interval ahead.

Gary Mason levelled for St Mirren with a long-range dipping volley but Kingston got in on the act to secure the victory.

Elsewhere Dougie Imrie hit his first goal for Inverness as the Highlanders cruised to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Kilmarnock.

The former Clyde player broke the deadlock in the 10th minute with a sublime left-footed free-kick from the edge of the Kilmarnock penalty area.

A cross from Imrie created Caley Thistle's second goal as David Lilley could only turn the ball into his own net after 71 minutes, before Marius Niculae completed the scoring with a confident finish.

In the day's final game Falkirk failed to shrug off the disappointment of missing out on a top-six place as they failed to break down the resistance of relegated Gretna.

The clash finished goalless and only came to life in the late stages.

Ben Wilkinson and Kyle Naughton had big changes to earn Gretna their first win since going into administration, while Falkirk substitute Carl Finnigan was denied what he thought was a certain penalty when a foul by Rostyn Griffiths was judged to have taken place outside the area.
