Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has one eye on Europe - and the other on next season.Eriksson is hoping his side overcome Portsmouth at Eastlands on Sunday and keep the Continental dream alive.

But he is already looking to the next campaign despite controversial remarks by owner Thaksin Shinawatra this week.

The former Thailand prime minister expressed his frustration at the team's recent form and said he will conduct a review of the club at the end of the season.

He refused to publicly back Eriksson but the Swede is already planning ahead.

Eriksson said: "We need to invest more money on players - that is part of the project.

"If we do that, it will be fantastic as we all want success.

"Everyone is looking forward to that happening and I am sure we will be better next season."

Eriksson believes he will grow in his second season in charge as will the players - and the owner.

He said: "This is a new team, a young team and you can see signs already these players are capable of winning trophies in the future.

"It is my job to concentrate on the team and the players to make sure we win games.

"Dr Thaksin thinks this side will be better next season. He also thinks he and the people around him will be better as they will understand football better."

Asked if he will be seeking assurances about his role, the former England boss said: "I already have assurances. I have a contract, so there is nothing to discuss about my situation.

"There is always pressure - that is why you want jobs in football. I like it.

"I had one year off (after England) and there was no pressure at all. That was absolutely awful."

City go into the match against Portsmouth on the back of a victory at Sunderland. But Eriksson expects the FA Cup finalists to provide difficult opposition.

He said: "They are having a good season and I am sure they will want to get a victory here.

"But if we are to get into Europe we have to win our remaining home games.

"We needed to beat Sunderland and we did, so I am confident of our chances against Portsmouth."
