Domenico Pozzovivo won the third stage of the 36th Giro del Trentino in Brenzone.
The Italian rider from Colnago - CSF was the strongest on the punishing 8.5km final climb of the Punta Veleno which has an average gradient of 15%.
He took the overall lead in the process although Lampre's Damiano Cunego limited his losses on the 2km descent before the false-flat finish to take third in the stage behind Liquigas' Sylwester Szmyd.
Triple Trentino champion Cunego trails Pozzovivo by 25 seconds on GC with Szmyd third at 49 seconds and just one second ahead of Roman Kreuziger. Overnight leader Mathias Frank dropped to fifth, at 1:42.
Pozzovivo said: "Everything panned out well, even though such extreme climbs are not that suited to me. Still, I found my day here in Punta Veleno, climbing constantly beyond my heart-rate threshold, and I never gave it up despite such an extreme effort. Tomorrow’s is another good stage for me, I think I have a chance to take it all.”
The race is good preparation for the Giro d'Italia with those who will be going for pink in May wanting to test their condition on Trentino’s slopes.
The four-day event concludes with a summit finish to Passo Pordoi on Friday.
