Champions League - Head-to-head

Eurosport - Mon, 19 May 12:15:00 2008

With the first ever all-English Champions League final just around the corner, we take a look at who's held the advantage in recent meetings between Manchester United and Chelsea.

FOOTBALL: Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo and Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole - 0

HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD

This is the first time the sides have met in European competition, but in 147 domestic meetings United have the upper hand with 65 wins to Chelsea's 40. There have been 42 draws.

PREVIOUS FINAL MEETINGS

The sides have contested two domestic finals, sharing one victory apiece. Two penalties from Eric Cantona set United on their way to a Double-clinching 4-0 FA Cup final win in 1994, while Didier Drogba's deft extra time goal enabled Chelsea to become the first FA Cup winners at the new Wembley last season.

MANAGERIAL RECORDS

Since Avram Grant took over from Jose Mourinho as Chelsea boss he's overseen one win and one defeat against Wednesday night's opponents.

His first match in charge was a 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford in September last year, but Michael Ballack's late penalty at Stamford Bridge at the end of April earned the Blues a 2-1 victory that temporarily blew the title race wide open.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been in charge for 54 games against Chelsea since taking over in November 1986 and has registered 18 wins, 20 draws and 16 defeats.

RECENT HISTORY

Two of the most remarkable Chelsea games of Ferguson's reign took place at Stamford Bridge.

In an FA Cup third round tie in January 1998 a rampant United established a 5-0 lead before a goal from Graeme Le Saux and a brace from Gianluca Vialli in the last 10 minutes produced a final score of 5-3.

In October 1999 Ferguson took his newly crowned Treble winners to the Bridge and came home with a 5-0 spanking that proved to be calamity-prone goalkeeper Massimo Taibi's last game for the club.

In the early 1990s Chelsea were often seen as one of United's bogey teams, and when United retained their Premiership title in 1993-1994 the Blues were the only team to do the double over them in the league that season. In 16 Premier League seasons, United have never done the league double over Chelsea.

More recent matches between the sides have proved no less eventful, with Chelsea sealing their 2005-2006 title triumph with a 3-0 home victory over United that also saw Wayne Rooney's World Cup participation thrown into doubt when he broke his metatarsal in a challenge with Paulo Ferreira.

GOALSCORERS

Much has been made of the fact that Cristiano Ronaldo has never scored in nine games against Chelsea, but team-mate Wayne Rooney has netted just once in 10 appearances against the Blues and Didier Drogba's cup final winner last season is his only strike against Alex Ferguson's men in nine appearances.

United-Chelsea games tend to be cagey affairs, but the last 30 matches have produced 73 goals at a not exactly miserly average of 2.43 goals per game. In the last 50 matches there have been six goalless draws.
