French Open - Bogdanovic wins opening qualifier

Eurosport - Tue, 19 May 22:38:00 2009

Alex Bogdanovic came from behind to beat American Ryler DeHeart 4-6 7-5 6-3 and make it through to the second round of qualifying for the French Open in Paris.

The 24 year-old - currently Britain's second-best male player with a world ranking of 198 - struggled as he lost the opening set against the world number 274, but fought back to earn a rare win in a year which has seen his form slump alarmingly.

Bogdanovic now faces either Brazil's Joao Souza (ranked 223) or India's Somdev Devvarman (ranked 138), and should he win again he will be just one game away from making a first appearance in the main draw at Roland Garros.

British number three Josh Goodall had worse luck, however, going down 6-4 6-4 to another American, world number 156 Amer Dilic.

The women's qualifying event begins on Wednesday with in-form Elena Baltacha playing Greece's Anna Gerasimou, while Katie O'Brien plays France's Karla Mraz and Georgie Stoop plays Croatia's Petra Martic.

Anne Keothavong and Mel South are spared qualifying this year thanks to their good results so far in 2009, and like men's world number three Andy Murray will be guaranteed at least one match at Roland Garros.
