Top 14 - Wilkinson joins Toulon

Eurosport - Tue, 19 May 09:16:00 2009

England's Jonny Wilkinson has joined French club Toulon from the Newcastle Falcons on a two-year deal but will remain available for the national team.

Wilkinson, 29, has suffered a succession of injuries since kicking the winning drop goal for England against Australia in the 2003 World Cup final.

"He has signed a two-year deal," Toulon president Mourad Boudjellal said at a presentation of the club's 16 new signings for next season. "Jonny still has to undergo further tests but for now, everything is fine (physically).

"He wants to play the 2011 World Cup with England. He's got two years to prepare for it with Toulon. The only condition was that he would be available for England - for the tests and the training camps."

Wilkinson has been sidelined for five months after dislocating his left kneecap during a club match.

Toulon have already signed Argentina flyhalf Felipe Contepomi for next season, when they will be coached by former France international Philippe Saint-Andre.

"He (Wilkinson) is very motivated. He has undergone some tests because we want to make sure that he is 100 per cent fit when the season starts," Saint-Andre said.

"He is a player who scores when the team dominate and who reassures his team mates when they suffer."

Boudjellal has attracted several internationals, including South Africa lock Victor Matfield and former Australia scrumhalf George Gregan, for short spells at the club in recent years.

Former New Zealand captain Tana Umaga coaches Toulon's backs.

Toulon made sure they would play in the French top flight next season by finishing ninth in the Top 14 this year.

Other signings include Scotland wing/fullback Rory Lamont and Contepomi, as well as experienced French scrumhalf Pierre Mignoni and hooker Sebastien Bruno.

  2. Jonny Wilkinson made 'a comeback' on the last Lions tour. He's a superb kicker, but unless he is 110% fit, he simply can't play in the outfield. Always a risk for any team, but he must be worth 12-15 points per game for any team through penalties alone.

  3. He is stuck in a nasty circle, has been since he won the world cup in 2003,It must make sense to break that nasty little circle and move abroad. He has given his all for club and country more than anyone I can think of.Good move jonny and good luck.

  5. Neil Jenkins never suffered anything like the same ammount of injuries as Wilkinson, truth be told, Wilkinson WAS an average to good fly half playing for what WAS a good England side. now, he's a washed up injured fly half making the most of his marketable name in search of one final pay day... good luck Jonny, I'd do the same!

  7. Wilko will use his natural football skills and i hope therefore advoid injury.
Premeirship rugby i think is mostley about monster collision and less skill unlike super 14

  8. nobody is doubting how good wilkinson was, the fact is he has not played consistently well since 2003. No player can survive on reputation alone.

doesnt matter if you have a dream team, if you dont get the combinations right, youre never goin to be the best

  15. if its not owen from the toon or wilkinson from the falcons we seem to be the biggest mugs up here, there sick notes between them could pay off the nations debt. We pay there wages just to see them move on when they are fit jeez what mugs we are.

  16. Toulon are now the proud owners of two crocked outhalves. Contepomi is out for at least 5 months and possibly more, while we all know Wilkinson is never going to going to manage a full season without injury.

  18. I think this is a poor move by wilkinson. He obviously does not have much time left in his playing career, and while he has done all there is at international level, all those years at newcastle has left him without any club honours. I am sure any high flying trophy winning club like leicester or toulouse would have been delighted to have a fit johnny in their ranks. Going for relegation battlers like toulon instead is a move which i think he may live to regret.

  20. English rugby has some serious issues to deal with. What with the trickle of players going to France threatening to become a torrent and the amount of players not qualified for England in the Guinness, they run the risk of having to play individuals who do not start for their clubs or play overseas and cannot train regularly with the England Squad. Can't be good !
