David James will undergo a shoulder operation this week that will rule him out of England's World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Andorra.
James, who has played all five of England's qualifers so far, missed Portsmouth's home match against Sunderland on Monday and his club said he would have an operation this week.
"He has had a long-standing shoulder injury which needs to be corrected," said Portsmouth manager Paul Hart.
"He goes into hospital on Wednesday to have it sorted out. We hope if he goes in now he has a good chance of starting next season.
"He will be out for the summer. David is a very strong-minded person. He has made a decision so he is fit for next season.
"He has weighed it up. It has to be done and there has to be a sacrifice."
Until Monday, the 38-year-old had played every minute of Portsmouth's Premier League season and helped them avoid relegation.
With Manchester United's reserve keeper Ben Foster also unavailable after surgery on his thumb, England coach Fabio Capello could turn to West Ham United's Robert Green or former England first choice Paul Robinson.
England, who lead Group Six with a maximum 15 points, play Kazakhstan away on June 6 and are at home to Andorra on June 10.

Hope yer shoulder gets better Calamity, but not too soon
Good - he's a liability!
poor im premier league;bye bye
Perhaps Richard Wright could do a good job on the bench, after a good season with Ipswich. Admittedly, Green is in the box seat for first choice keeper, with what there is available.
Good! He's getting on abit now, chance to either give Paul Robinson his chance back. Finally give Rob Green a chance! And dont forget Chris Kirkland, injury prone :( but solid keeper!
THIS IS EVEN BETTER NEWS THAN ENGLAND'S BID TO HOST THE 2018 WORLD CUP!!! AHAHAH
Got to bring in Rob Green, he has been ready for a call up for about three seasons now. He is our best keeper, with consistency and the ability to control his area and a great shot stopper.

mercer 1675;; Joe Hart was Man City no 1 until Given arrived. Also he is a brilliant goalkeeper.
Joe Hart is apparently linked with Villa, we will see.
Anyway it was just an opinion
arslivman, take him in where??
Why dont we use David Seaman as a goalkeeping coach and get him in there PDQ
take Almunia in
scouse hater.... your right again mate the players who play for England should play for free! just the fact that your representing your country is more than enough payment pride and passion should compensate payment. If i was asked to represent my country at anything id give it everything i had blood sweat and tears just to wear that precious 3 lions is a major honour people take for granted now, but i dont think capello will have slackers in our team no more like previous managers. I hope not anyway..
It must be Green he has been ok of late and James is sooo unreliable let Greeno have a go
doing good scousehater, hows yourself.
Comment 39 is a bit below the belt, what have you said to deserve that??????????
How many times have we been told that England are going to win a major competition and how many times has it actually happened. We dont even get as far as the finals. A major trophy is long overdue and the disappointment level is rising.
scouse hater!! at 5'11 and 16 stone your obviously a fat c**t ;]
this crisis has been looming for a few years and we cant rely on James being ready or fully fit and able if as a keeper he is having a shoulder op and at 38 and in the twilight of his career, the op make take longer to heal than expected, we cant "wait and see", we have to have a couple of other keepers available and ready. If Ben Foster is fit he must be given a chance but who else is up for the job. None of the keepers we have tried have been consistent and even James himself is nicknamed "calamity". Most of the keepers in the EPL are foreign so Capello will have to look in the Championship, something he should be doing anyway
England will not win the world cup. Our prime time has come and gone and now we're left like chickens scratching around in the dirt. Too old or too young now. Potential - yes. But needs time to gel and there is no time with the Premier season so long and cramped. 1966? Who cares? Wasn't in my lifetime, so it means nothing to me. It's just a piece of history. Derby won the FA Cup in 1946 - who gives a @#$%? I only care about what they do now.
England goalkeeper? Gods knows. Give Sir Alex dual-nationality after living here so long and chuck him in there. If he can deflect shots as well as he can deflect questions, we'll have no problem.
