Napier hits 16 sixes in world record knock
Essex all-rounder Graham Napier equalled the record for the number of sixes in a first-class innings when he struck 16 in a county match against Surrey.
Napier equalled the record for the most sixes in a first-class set by Andrew Symonds for Gloucestershire against Glamorgan in 1995 before he was last man out in Essex's 548.
The 31-year-old, who also holds the record for most sixes in a Twenty20 match, flayed the Surrey attack after reaching his century in 102 balls, as he then thrashed 96 from his next 28 deliveries.
The secondary onslaught included 11 sixes and four boundaries as he continued his remarkable return from a long-term back injury, having taken a hat-trick in a Clydesdale Bank 40 match with Glamorgan earlier this month.
Napier was narrowly denied his double century when he was caught behind to give Stuart Meaker his fourth wicket.
After being pummelled by Napier, Surrey dished out some of their own punishment as they reached the close on 277 for four. Skipper Rory Hamilton-Brown led the way with an unbeaten 148 while England right-hander Kevin Pietersen made 58 before he was trapped lbw by Matt Walker.
Elsewhere, first division champions and leaders Nottinghamshire were forced to follow on for the second successive match as they looked set for defeat after being skittled for 117 against Warwickshire at Trent Bridge.
Boyd Rankin and Darren Maddy shared three wickets in the demolition job after Ian Bell hit a timely 139 ahead of next week's first Test as the Bears made 376.
Bell sent the hosts straight back in and it proved the right choice as Rankin took three more wickets to leave Nottinghamshire 60 for four and still 199 runs in arrears.
Lancashire's batsmen ensured they maintained full control of their Roses clash with Yorkshire to be 327 for eight at the close on day two in Liverpool.
Yorkshire were bowled out for 141 on Wednesday and Lancashire were able to build a 186-run lead. Opener Paul Horton led the way with 93, while Mark Chilton added 77.
Durham also enjoyed a dominant day against Worcestershire after three of their batsmen reached centuries in their first-innings 587 for seven declared.
While Gordon Muchall (175) and Ian Blackwell (134) failed to add many more to their overnight scores skipper Phil Mustard blasted 101 to leave the Pears a mountain to climb.
That task was made even harder when former England paceman Steve Harmison grabbed three quick wickets to leave them 105 for five.
Sussex relinquished a good position against Somerset after they were bowled out for 177 at Hove.
Peter Trego took four for 24 to rip through the hosts and give Somerset an unlikely 36-run first-innings lead that was increased further when skipper Marcus Trescothick (64 not out) guided them to 114 for one at the close.
Middlesex endured a horror first day against Glamorgan at Lord's as they were bowled out for 150 before the visitors reached 151 for one.
Seamer James Harris, who turned 21 earlier this week, claimed five for 41 before unbeaten half-centuries from Gareth Rees and William Bragg edged Glamorgan ahead by a run.
Gloucestershire skipper Alex Gidman hit his first century in almost two years, after New Zealander Kaine Williamson scored 148, to guide his side to 504 for nine declared at Leicestershire.
Gidman hit 168 from 244 balls before his late declaration failed to snare a wicket as Leicestershire finished 15 for none.

Realist I'd have to say if there was a competition between you and a huge sack of wet @#$%, to see which of you contained the most wet @#$%, you would win by a comfortable margin. Congratutations.
shore, de subjec is crikit but langwidj is wot wee hav in comon so wee kan comyoonikate.
If we don't get the words right, how are we going to share our ideas about anything, be it cricket or anything else?
i have never made a mastake while wrating grammar like what i do know about any way i thuoght this were a cricket forum not a bloody english lesson
not a pitch which could be called a 'good contest between bat and ball' then...
Not difficult at all Shabba, just a simple typing error, have you never made one? and the error wasn't really grammatical. :) ... Enough.
Frank B (post 14) - before you criticise someone else's spelling, why don't you work on your own grammar first? How hard is it to know the difference between 'your' and 'you're'?
Realist saying "And you sir are a wannabee toff". What is this 1898? Sounds like he's a wannabe pompous @rsehole.
I'll concede the 'z' then cog, even though I still think it is creeping Americanisation but I still don't see why you appear to criticise something that is correct. Unless of course you were asking because you didn't know.
I was actually asking Frank, if I was being a pedant by asking if 'world' or 'country' should be capitaliSed.
It's a cricket thread, it's standard for the subject to be taken down another path where it will be, within a few more posts be taken down another...then another in a light-hearted jaunt of merriment and humour.
When have you ever in the past heard any R3 commentary being taken seriously ? In fact the radio was turned off if it did!
P.Coupor whilst writing about the history of Test Match Special in 2007 said.
"Johnston provided the life, Arlott the soul"
It's cricket, tales of chocolate cakes being sent from Miss Arbuthnott from Petersfield are no longer here.
Nor is any humour.
To the American who critcised the feeble spelling. Frank B is correct, please take note.
You have neither the wit nor the patience to understand cricket. It is a wonderful sport not based on the need for immediate gratification. Unfortunately, this also applies to Realist. It's not "A game invented by toffs, played by wannabe toffs and reviled by true sports fans", please do your homework. It is reviled by the hard of thinking.
To rt.detailling, I could not agree more. However, it could have been worse, it could have been Geoff Boycott knock followed by a Chris Tavare coma...
I'll concede the 'z' then cog, even though I still think it is creeping Americanisation but I still don't see why you appear to criticise something that is correct. Unless of course you were asking because you didn't know.
Meaningless..Ridiculously short boundaries at that ground. You end up accidently getting sixes when you were going for a four
Realist, Your an Idiot.
and according to oxforddictionariescom/page/spellingizeiseyse both are acceptable.
That is why I asked Frank.
If your going to be pedantic cog you really should get it right or you will look as though you should go back to school. Absoloutly no reason to capitalise (with an 's' by the way unless your an American) either 'world' or 'county'. The 'Earth' or 'Surrey', yes.
Actually roy, it doesn't make me wonder at all. Is there any reason it should?
You are all boring and Pedant and your spelling is feeble
He has got to play 20/20 cricket for England, if he's up to international standard that is. Not all can perform on the big stage.
Now why can't k.pieterson do this!!? makes you wonder!!
Without trying to appear as a pedant and a @#$%....okay I'm a pedant and a @#$%.
But isn't 'world' and 'county' capitalized?
