Bastian Schweinsteiger believes he has made amends for his red card against Croatia after helping Germany beat Portugal in Basle. The Bayern Munich midfielder scored one goal and created two more as the Germans claimed a 3-2 victory in Thursday night's quarter-final showdown - and a place in the last four of Euro 2008.
Schweinsteiger had to sat out their Group B finale against Austria following his red card in their 2-1 defeat to Croatia.
And the midfielder admitted he had a score to settle after letting his team-mates down in that match.
"I didn't help the team then and I intended to pay them back, and I think I did it," Schweinsteiger said. "I am delighted that we have won. It is sensational and we have beaten the best team in the competition, in my eyes."
Germany presented a new look for the game, dropping their familiar 4-4-2 formation in favour of playing two defensive midfielders and allowing Michael Ballack and Lukas Podolski more freedom in advanced positions.
"The decisive thing was that we changed something," said Ballack.
"We were used to playing 4-4-2, but were lacking a bit of creativity, passion and ideas and I think the key was the way we changed.
"The whole team was more stable and you could see what potential there is in this team."
Schweinsteiger is optimistic about his team's chances of reaching the final.
"In football, anything is possible," added Schweinsteiger on Germany's ARD television.
"We can play football, we can fight and now we look forward to the next game."
Germany will play either Croatia or Turkey in the last four.
