Champions League - Terry blasts team-mates' bans

Eurosport - Fri, 19 Jun 21:34:00 2009

Chelsea captain John Terry has criticised the severity of the punishments handed out to Didier Drogba and Jose Bosingwa for their Champions League semi-final tirades.

FOOTBALL; Didier Drogba, John Terry, Chelsea v Cluj, Dec 2008 - 0

The pair were banned by UEFA for, respectively, four and three European matches - with extra games suspended - this week for their part in the controversy which followed the Londoners' second-leg draw with Barcelona at Stamford Bridge.

"What happened with Didier and the comments made after the game took the hype away from the referee a little bit," the England skipper told talkSPORT.

A 1-1 scoreline sent the Blues crashing out to the eventual champions, but the Catalans' injury-time equaliser came after referee Tom Henning Ovrebo had turned down several strong penalty appeals from the English side.

Drogba, in particular, caused controversy with his post-match reaction, when he branded the Norwegian official a "f****** disgrace" on live television.

He apologised a day later, however, and Terry believes he deserved softer treatment from European football's governing body.

Terry added: "It was a very bad performance from him (Ovrebo), we all realised that. There were three or four clear penalty decisions that we should have had that night and that's something as a fan and as a player you will never forget.

"It was disappointing. I would like the people in charge to take these things in to perspective and realise that after the game Didier came out and apologised for his actions. I think he realises that kids were watching and he deserves a ban. But to that extent? I really don't think so. Maybe a two-match ban."

Bosingwa was punished for calling Ovrebo "a thief" in a post-match interview, and again Terry does not believe the right-back's misdemeanour warranted such a tough penalty.

"Jose Bosingwa's ban, I don't know where that's come from," said Terry. "Obviously every player was feeling what Bosingwa felt and thankfully nobody else said what he said. But he said what every fan and every player was thinking. Hopefully Chelsea can appeal and we can get that [the ban] down a little bit because we want those two players for the campaign next year."

  1. Is nothing going to happen to ballack. He is a punk. I hate chelsea but even they are too good for that little b itch. I hope he breaks his f ucking leg next season and is never able to fully recover

  2. I find it rather strange that so many obviously anti Chelsea people seem to trawl the links looking for threads to spew their vitriol. If comments by Chelsea players "annoy" you so much than stay away from the threads and simply dont read them. Also lets be clear - Chelsea WERE robbed by a corrupt referee clearly acting under orders and there is no point whatever appealing because the decision was made months ago and wont be reduced. Lets just wait and see next season what action is taken against Spanish/Turkish/ I talian clubs when there are problems ( as every year) in their grounds.

  3. I think it's time that football clubs and players finally grew up. There were many things wrong on the night and it was a manifestation of Chelsea's problems throughout the season. No one player is bigger than the game we all love except for the players tonwhom it is a job and for many a meal ticket. Unfortunately they do not all love the game as much as us fans and do not understand the rules. I would like to say that Chelsea deserved all 4 penalties but I am not a liar. The media and especially the papers do not help the situation. They only want to sell newspapers. It happens time and again. They will enlarge any minor discrepancy.

Firstly, only one of the 4 'claims' for a penalty was remotely near to being a penalty. The rule is hand to ball not ball to hand. The referee called both claims correctly. No penalty! Drogba's claim maybe should have been a penalty but if a referee sees throughout the game that he is falling down feigning injury he finally realises that this player is trying to make him look like a fool and of course he won't be made to look like fool. Drogba is a cheat and needs to look at himself and decide what he wants to be remembered for in the game. A cheat or a brilliant forward. Right now all fans HATE him and know him as a cheat. Change now Drogba or leave English football we don't need you here. You teach our children how to cheat not how to play football. Look at Ian Rush. Gary Lineker... NOT Alan Shearer.
Secondly, John Terry - shut up please. You are the biggest cheat - what you did to Ledley King in the Spurs match was unbelievable and deserved a further ban for your racial comments - and you being Captain of England is shocking. You cannot say Drogba realised about kids watching the next day - you KNOW they watch all games and read papers. He should not have been on the field of play at the end and should NOT be talking to anyone let alone the referee like that.

  5. Discipline is the key simple.Penalty is not a goal untill it is played and scored. Drogba should learn to be cautious after all he was subtituted and he is not the captain, also he did not score a goal that was disallowed, so why was he more emotional than any other player? May be he loves chelsea more than ABRAHAMOVIC.

  8. John Terry has no right to criticise any referee when he is the biggest cheat of them all. He whines but has no values of life. Both players got what they deserved and should be ashamed of themselves for acting the way they did. We are trying extremely hard to educate park players and youngsters in the game to play the game correctly and learn the laws as they should be played to. Shame that the pro players refuse to take the laws of the game but are happy to break them week in week out.

  9. The ref was a disgrace and a thief. The bans are much too harsh. It's either racism or Platini just doesn't like to see English clubs win. Congrats to Drogba and Bosingwa for call a duck a duck. And big up to to Terry the heart of the team.

If you ask me, why wasn't the ref penalised?

I have lost so much respect for Terry! He could have stepped up to the plate and made sure he stood up for what is right for all the little fans out there watching these men....who am I kiddin', they are not men they pathetic little boys having a tantrum. Terry could have righted the wrong caused by his team mates, instead he has displayed yet another pathetic stance of being the "victim". WHERE HAVE ALL THE MEN GONE IN THIS WORLD?!?!?! Stand up for what is right, take responsibility for your actions, call it out as you see and MAN THE F@@K UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wanna appeal a lenient decision! Then I hope UEFA doubles the ban for Diveba and Bitchwa!!! UEFA should also look back at Bollock chasing the ref and slap him with a ban too. Money is no object seeing as how Russian money buys silver easily, so treble that while they are there!!!!

Ovrebo should officiate ALL Chelsea CL matches! That is the punishment he deserves. He should be the one to show the world how corrupt are chelsea and how childish they are in the face of defeat. If they could not win last year when Terry sold their victory to Man United, why do they hope to ever win it again. Didn't Terry make the confession public? Man United might have given him huge amounts of money to miskick that peno. He is worse than Ovrebo. Open your eyes chelsea, terry is the worse there is. He sacked Jose M, Avram G and big Phil. He doesn't like foreign managers and hates chelsea. He is a crying dragon and a devil.

  14. John Terry should be fined as well! I really have never liked that boy. He is so childish and he was amongst the players who assaulted Ovrebo after the match. he should be fined £100,000! He is here making noise as if he knows anything about good football: he lost chelsea a final last year and is here now making a bigmouth ape-like comments.

  16. if uefa is going to ban let them ban them even if they want to ban the entire squad,OVREBO this is a man that shuld not be seing in sportmanship again because he will ruin football, this a man that if u look at his record his not a good refree.lets see about poor officiating atleast they need to be ban too.ROB STYLE gave chelsea penalty against liverpool 3yrs ago only what he said was am sorry, this lad dat gave a goal instead of corner kick (WATFORD AGAINST READING),what about the goal DROGBA score against JUVENTUS, the penalty given to LIVERPOOL in the last minute against A.MADRID. all this was refree wrong,BUT YOU WILL NEVER TALK ABOUT THEM ONLY THE PLAYER YOU BAN THIS IS A DISGRACE.AT WORLD CUP IN A MATCH AV EVER SEE REFREE ISSUING 16 CARDS,BLATTER BLAME HIM BUT NO BAN, IN A GAME AV SEING REFREE ISSUE 2 YELLOW CARD TO A PLAYER WITHOUT SHOWING RED CARD. AM SORRY SOME REFREE NEED TO BE BEATING AT TIMES SMACK. WE DNT WANT CHEAT ANYMORE.
