Championship - Martinez letter to fans over exit

Eurosport - Fri, 19 Jun 12:38:00 2009

Roberto Martinez says the time he spent weighing up whether to leave Swansea and become manager of Wigan were "the hardest two weeks of his life".

FOOTBALL Swansea Roberto Martinez - 0

The Spaniard, who was unveiled as new Latics boss on Tuesday, wrote an open letter to Swansea fans in the South Wales Evening Post.

"To say that these had been the hardest two weeks of my life is an understatement," he wrote.

"Over the past two-and-a-half years I've given my life to try to put Swansea City where it belongs with style and good football.

"I never thought this moment would arrive, but there are a few reasons why I have had to make this decision.

"It would have been easy to stay, but it would have been the wrong decision.

"I hope you've been proud of the football and the team over the last two campaigns. I feel proud to have been part of the journey."

Paolo Sousa, the former Portugal international, has verbally accepted a three-year deal and looks set to sign a contract next week to become Martinez's successor.

  2. Never mind the pangs of guilt and the letter of apology to the fans he betrayed; let's get one thing straight - Martinez acted dishonorably, he broke his contract and left for the money. Now he's raiding the family silver - Gomez now; Pratley, Scotland to follow?? Let's see what fortune it will bring him next season....Etre bueyes no hay cornadas, amigo. There is honour only amongst thieves....

He says he is proud to have been "part of the journey". Pity he fell by the wayside all too quickly....must have been the 30 pieces of silver jingling in his pocket.
