Confederations Cup - Italy stunned by Egypt

Eurosport - Fri, 19 Jun 09:12:00 2009

Egypt scored their greatest ever victory in Johannesburg with a thoroughly deserved 1-0 win over world champions Italy who had never previously lost to an African team.

FOOTBALL Egypt's Mohamed Hommos celebrates with team mates after scoring
against Italy during their Confederations Cup match at
Ellis Park in Johannesburg - 0

The shock result means Group B in the Confederations Cup hangs in the balance with all four teams still able to progress to next week's semi-finals.

Mohamed Hommos's goal five minutes before halftime clinched the first points of the tournament for the African champions, who narrowly lost 4-3 to Brazil in their opening game.

Most of the Egyptians and coach Hassan Shehata shed tears of joy at the final whistle as they became the first African side in 15 attempts to beat the Italians.

Key second half saves from veteran goalkeeper Essam Al Hadari, who had an inspired match, kept the Italians at bay while Vincenzo Iaquinta hit the crossbar with just minutes remaining as Egypt weathered a late onslaught.

Brazil, who beat the United States in Pretoria earlier on Thursday, lead the standings with six points while Italy and Egypt have three.

Brazil and Italy meet in Pretoria on Sunday while the Egyptians play the Americans, who have yet to pick up a point, in Rustenburg at the same time.

Despite losing both games the US still have a remote chance of getting through to the last four.

Lippi made five changes to the team that started against the US with the return of fit-again captain Fabio Cannavaro, winning his 124th cap - two short of Paolo Maldini's all-time Italian record of 126.

Cannavaro, typically, added steel to the Italian defence, while Giuseppe Rossi, who came on as a substitute and scored twice against the US, added youthful zest to the attack.

Both teams enjoyed plenty of possession in their first meeting since Italy beat Egypt 5-1 in a World Cup qualifier 55 years ago, but it was a still a real surprise when the Egyptians took the lead five minutes before the break.

Italy only had themselves to blame, leaving Hommos unmarked to score with a powerful header from Mohamed Aboutrika's perfect inswinging corner.

The Italians had also trailed the US 1-0 at the break in their opening match, before coming back strongly to win.

But Egypt held their nerve and their ground despite Italy bringing in attacking reinforcements Luca Toni, Simone Pepe and Riccardo Montolivo in the second half.

They might have known it was not to be their night when El Hadari made two fine stops in two minutes in the first half from Iaquinta after 24 minutes and Rossi, who forced the keeper into another fine save when he palmed the ball over the bar.

Egypt, despite winning only once in their last five matches and getting off to a poor start in their final World Cup qualifying group, never looked overawed by the Italians.

Mohamed Shawky and Sayed Moawad gave as good as they got in the midfield battle for supremacy, with Italy's Gennaro Gattuso,

De Rossi and Andrea Pirlo battling to cope with the inventiveness of the African champions' approach play.

Both teams threatened after the break, and El Hadari made another excellent save from Montolivo after 74 minutes to keep Egypt in the lead.

Iaquinta almost equalised for Italy five minutes from time, only to see his long range curling shot hit the bar and Italy's hopes of winning the game bounce away with it.

  1. Don't be a sore loser and stop whining. This is a sport. Whether you win or lose, you accept it and shake hands with your opponent. Egypt won the game although they were outplayed by the Italians, which makes it even worse for the Italians themselves. The Egyptians gave Brazil a hard time and they came back and scored against Italy. Holding the African title for 6 times (2 of these were 06 and 08) is something and honestly the Egyptian wanted to win more. Whoever says it's not an embarrassment for Italy to lose today just cuz it's the confederations cup is only trying to make him or herself feel better. Bottom line, both team were playing today to win but the ball smiled for who wanted it more. Brazil and Egypt to the Semis. Brazil and Spain to the Final and then anything can happen from over there. Haddari should be the man of the match. He deserves the Golden Gloves. Kudos for my Egyptian friends from an English fan here in Liverpool

  3. Comment 66, stop all these stories of yours. This is not friendly match, it is a FIFA organised competition and you Italians were beaten blue black by the Egyptians. Kindly accept it that Football is coming to Africa and FIFA should incerase the number of African countries participation in worl cup and reduce that of Europe since they don't longer know how to play football. In fact, Africa should have at least seven representatives.

  4. I wouldn't be too discouraged. Stuff like that happens. Mind you we are the world champs. However, this isn't the world cup. If it was the world cup, then that would be an embarassment. Other than that. There's still hope. Though brazil beat us in a friendly earlier this year, I think that we could still take them. Take for example when we lost to wales in in 2002 during the 2004 euro qualifiers and when we lost to slovenia in 2004 during the 2006 world cup qualifiers. We had tough opposition ahead of us and we pulled through. I think that we could do the same against brazil. we already know their playing style (especially since half of them play in serie a).

  5. Since Egypt beat Italia FIFA should declare Egypt has the world number one footballing nation and champion of the world. I want to see Egypt and South
Africa in the final as a dress reharssal of 2010 World Cup.

  6. As an Italian I was embarassed and deeply irritated at the way Lippi put the team out tonight. No wingers, so you'd assume the full backs would push up right ? Wrong, Grosso rarely showed up while Zambrotta just focused on defending, the team had no width and the players were obviously lost , not knowing what to do. Quagliarella, for all his huge talent, kept running against a defensive wall, Rossi was not touching the ball and Iaquinta did the usually running. If only Italy was not so concerned with not conceding first they might actually achieve something. I am sick and tired of having to struggle against inferior teams, having to come back from behind, it doesn't always work, and you don't always win on penalties either. I should have known from the friendly against New Zealand (4-3) that
something was wrong. No soul, no heart and wrong players. Why was Cassano left home ? Foggia ?

  9. Egypt should go on to win the world cup now what with it being in Africa and all. I suspect they will play Ivory Coast in the final. England and South Africa will be the other semi finalists.

  10. I don't know which match some of you were watching but Egypt definitelty were not defensive. They have almost the same percentage of possession and number of shots on goal as the Italians. Had they been more sharper in the third end of the field they could even have scored more. Kudos for Egypt and it's back to the drawing board for the Italians because it's Brazil next.

Whoever win a game is the champion, so why you lil scums bickering? Italy tried but they should thank God that Egypt didnt capitalize on their weaknesses. 20. Italy have lost in the past to, Ireland, Wales, Korea, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary and now Egypt, but who cares they always bounce back, they make life hard for them selves we all know that. Italy will always have great players its a shame they don't know when to use them. They have good managers but they are never around for the national side till Lippi was used as living proof.
