Stephen Jones will start at fly-half for the British and Irish Lions in the first Test against South Africa in Durban on Saturday.
Wales' Jones (pictured) won his personal dual with Irish rival Ronan O'Gara to wear the number 10 jersey in the crucial clash at the ABSA Stadium against the world champions.
Jones will form a half-back pairing with international team-mate Mike Phillips in a side that features six players from Wales, five from Ireland and four from England.
As expected, Lee Byrne starts at full-back, Brian O'Driscoll partners Jamie Roberts at centre, while Tommy Bowe and Ugo Monye start on the wings.
Up front, captain Paul O'Connell packs down in the second row with Alun-Wyn Jones, who is preferred to the Lions' heavier lock options Donncha O'Callaghan, Simon Shaw and Nathan Hines.
The openside flank berth goes to Ireland's David Wallace - who is selected ahead of Martyn Williams - in a back row that also includes number eight Jamie Heaslip and blindside flanker Tom Coft.
Props Gethin Jenkins and Phil Vickery pack down with hooker Lee Mears in the front row.
Martyn Williams is joined on the bench by O'Gara and O'Callaghan, but there is no place for Wales wing and former IRB player of the year Shane Williams amongst the replacements, or giant England prop Andrew Sheridan.
Rob Kearney provides cover for the wing and Adam Jones for prop. Matthew Rees backs up Mears, and Harry Ellis will cover the scrum-half role.
The Lions have won all six of their provincial games to date and head coach Ian McGeechan said the Test team had been picked purely on form.
"The Test team has been picked on form following the six provincial matches," said McGeechan.
"There were some very difficult calls to make as the players as a group and individually have done everything that we have asked of them and performed on the field."
The Test starting XV has not yet played together on tour, but McGeechan was comfortable going into the showdown against a Boks side that - bar flanker Heinrich Brussow - has not featured in any of the tour games.
"It has been 20 years since a Lions team has won all of it provincial matches leading up to the Test series so it is very satisfying to be in such a position," added McGeechan.
"The entire squad and the management have worked hard to create an outstanding team environment. Everyone has done this very professionally and it is fair to say that I would not change anything that we have done so far."
Skipper O'Connell said he was confident of his team's chances despite the quality of the opposition.
"It's a great team, our focus is good, we know what we are doing and I think we've got a great chance," said the Munsterman.
"We had a good training session today and the spirit is there. The next few days are going to be important in ticking off the little details that can make such a big difference.
"When we've got the little things right on this tour we've looked a very good side. But we know the Springboks are the best team in the world, a really serious side who are going to provide us with a massive challenge."
British and Irish Lions: 15-Lee Byrne, 14-Tommy Bowe, 13-Brian O'Driscoll, 12-Jamie Roberts, 11-Ugo Monye, 10-Stephen Jones, 9-Mike Phillips; 8-Jamie Heaslip, 7-David Wallace, 6-Tom Croft, 5-Paul O'Connell (capt), 4-Alun-Wyn Jones, 3-Phil Vickery, 2-Lee Mears, 1-Gethin Jenkins.
Replacements: 16-Matthew Rees, 17-Adam Jones, 18-Donncha O'Callaghan, 19-Martyn Williams, 20-Harry Ellis, 21-Ronan O'Gara, 22-Rob Kearney.

ROG is a class act and against another team he might be a better choice, but the Boks will run from the back row against his channel, you cannot afford have a fly half who will wait for contact and only 50/50 to make the tackle by himself. The Boks would have spent the first 40 hitting that channe, ROG wouldn't have survived the half. Jones and Phillips won't need the backrow to cover them,or the channel. If it turns out that the boks play 3/4 rugby then pick him, but they are going to large it and that needs tacklers.
vickery against the notoriously dirt springboks? hello yellow cards
Good team, looks far better already than Sir Clive's! Hopefully the speed in the pack will catch the Boks cold - if not it could be a case of returning to plan B, and bringing in the heavy mob.
How can shane williams not be even in the replacements, you always pick the world player of the year who when Wales played S.A was running rings round even Habana!
david glynn.. your an idiot.. you obviously know nothing bout rugby so im not even gonna argue with you
o connell will show on sat what he dose best .good team picked the boks arent as good as people are making them out to be.
Feeling a bit sorry for big nathan hines. Thought he might make the bench simply because of his flexability. He could replace a second row or flanker. And he has played well on tour so far.
sugruejames55: crawl back under that rock that you came from. You are obviously spawned from the the late orange2tuf. You are a disgrace to your country.
on a different note, where is all this negativity coming from towards O'Connell. He may not have been brilliant but you don't become a bad player in two weeks and he is the strongest player we have in the forwards and the best line out jumper.
this will be the best chance the lions will have to win a test match, the boks have not had a game for months so let's catch um cold then who knows what will happen in the next two tests
A match France/British lions would be needed
ROG versus Steve Jones- One dropped the goal to win the Grand slam the other missed the penalty - who's got the nerve ? What more does ROG got to prove that he is better than Jones who was awful on Satruday! Who won the game for the Lions against Southern Kings ? ROG. Bad selection that!
O'Connell not good enough - we'll see come test time. He'll be the only Lion to contest lineout.
After his intial error of judgement in selecting the captain Geech has bottled it; o'Connell is just not good enough either as player or captain he has no presence. Likewise for his club mate o'Callaghan who has who seemed completely lost. Wyn Jones will have an immense amount to do to make up for either of this pair. Simon Shaw has been immense when he's come on what does he have to do?
why do people keep saying they wish williams was in the team and o callahan, they are on the bench... that not count as being in the team anymore?
Jones is totally the right call over O'Gara. Far superior all round player. O'Gara would have been targeted and pulverised by the strong Sth African runners. Can;t tackle you see! If Hook had been fit, i'd have had him on the bench ahead ROG.
Suspect the Sth Africans will be v pleased not to see Shane Williams in the line-up. He's the IRB player of the year, and the one who really puts the fear into the Sth Africans. Imagine Sth Africa not picking Brian Habana cos he's off form? They just wouldn't, because they'd back him to produce the goods when it matters.
Nice Strong Team , Suprised to see a few players not in the team like Martin Williams and Andrew Sheridan.
O'Connell is only in the team because he's captain , had a bad tour so far lets hope he comes good on Saturday
Dont think the Boks will be losing to much sleep over Saturday , i got the Lions winning by 5 points.
Lets stop argueing over the selection and behind the Boys
Sheridan is a great scrummager but lacks a little around the park and those books will be playing a fast game.
Glad to see Gech has picked the test team on players on form and not reputation, Croft deserves to be in the side but I believe we will miss Williams fighting for the loose ball on the ground something Wallace is not capable of doing so well, perhaps he should have played No6? and Williams No7, whatever happens i'm sure it will be a great test and lets all get behind the lions whatever nationality.
buff is full of barf
SHERIDAN is english and a waste of space
