Lions 2009 - Jones gets nod for first Test

Eurosport - Fri, 19 Jun 16:57:00 2009

Stephen Jones will start at fly-half for the British and Irish Lions in the first Test against South Africa in Durban on Saturday.

Stephen Jones - Lions 2009 - 0

Wales' Jones (pictured) won his personal dual with Irish rival Ronan O'Gara to wear the number 10 jersey in the crucial clash at the ABSA Stadium against the world champions.

Jones will form a half-back pairing with international team-mate Mike Phillips in a side that features six players from Wales, five from Ireland and four from England.

As expected, Lee Byrne starts at full-back, Brian O'Driscoll partners Jamie Roberts at centre, while Tommy Bowe and Ugo Monye start on the wings.

Up front, captain Paul O'Connell packs down in the second row with Alun-Wyn Jones, who is preferred to the Lions' heavier lock options Donncha O'Callaghan, Simon Shaw and Nathan Hines.

The openside flank berth goes to Ireland's David Wallace - who is selected ahead of Martyn Williams - in a back row that also includes number eight Jamie Heaslip and blindside flanker Tom Coft.

Props Gethin Jenkins and Phil Vickery pack down with hooker Lee Mears in the front row.

Martyn Williams is joined on the bench by O'Gara and O'Callaghan, but there is no place for Wales wing and former IRB player of the year Shane Williams amongst the replacements, or giant England prop Andrew Sheridan.

Rob Kearney provides cover for the wing and Adam Jones for prop. Matthew Rees backs up Mears, and Harry Ellis will cover the scrum-half role.

The Lions have won all six of their provincial games to date and head coach Ian McGeechan said the Test team had been picked purely on form.

"The Test team has been picked on form following the six provincial matches," said McGeechan.

"There were some very difficult calls to make as the players as a group and individually have done everything that we have asked of them and performed on the field."

The Test starting XV has not yet played together on tour, but McGeechan was comfortable going into the showdown against a Boks side that - bar flanker Heinrich Brussow - has not featured in any of the tour games.

"It has been 20 years since a Lions team has won all of it provincial matches leading up to the Test series so it is very satisfying to be in such a position," added McGeechan.

"The entire squad and the management have worked hard to create an outstanding team environment. Everyone has done this very professionally and it is fair to say that I would not change anything that we have done so far."

Skipper O'Connell said he was confident of his team's chances despite the quality of the opposition.

"It's a great team, our focus is good, we know what we are doing and I think we've got a great chance," said the Munsterman.

"We had a good training session today and the spirit is there. The next few days are going to be important in ticking off the little details that can make such a big difference.

"When we've got the little things right on this tour we've looked a very good side. But we know the Springboks are the best team in the world, a really serious side who are going to provide us with a massive challenge."

British and Irish Lions: 15-Lee Byrne, 14-Tommy Bowe, 13-Brian O'Driscoll, 12-Jamie Roberts, 11-Ugo Monye, 10-Stephen Jones, 9-Mike Phillips; 8-Jamie Heaslip, 7-David Wallace, 6-Tom Croft, 5-Paul O'Connell (capt), 4-Alun-Wyn Jones, 3-Phil Vickery, 2-Lee Mears, 1-Gethin Jenkins.

Replacements: 16-Matthew Rees, 17-Adam Jones, 18-Donncha O'Callaghan, 19-Martyn Williams, 20-Harry Ellis, 21-Ronan O'Gara, 22-Rob Kearney.

  2. Sugrue, throughout the whole of this tour all you've done is slate every individuals country apart from your own, take off the green tinted specs for a minute and look at the team as a whole rather than individual cliques. You c t. I hope you don't have to write in this forum on Saturday night with an apology about how you were wrong.

  3. Its funny to read all these armchair selectors. I a Geech a fool! - I dont think so with the success he has had. Is he with the squad day in day out. Are the other management team biased? Are they intent on picking a team to loose? I dont think so.
Stop the winging - let the guys do their job off the field and get behind the team when they take the field.
As for Vickery.....just maybe the Boks would agree he should be left out.

  4. People calm down....its a great team and full of exciting players some need to prove thier selection and others have already earn't it, this is the British & Irish Lions team we have to get behind and support, we all know what can happen on the day, when nostrils are flared and players are prepared to give it their all....
    COME ON U LIONS !!!!!!!!!!

  5. Feel sorry for Powell, especially as Heaslip hasn't played as well as he's capable - he'll be shown up against this Spies guy I reckon! Shame Dan Ward-Smith was injured a couple of years ago, otherwise he'd be playing Lions number 8 on this tour with several England caps under his belt too! On another note, Vickery's discipline is awful, Roberts looks awesome, Mears will be battered and Bowe will shine.

  8. McGeec had little choice with selection: Fitzgerald maybe unlucky to have played out of position once and in toughest game, but he's not done anything. Shane Williams has looked out of form, Kearney not fully fit: O'Gara doesnt tackle and his field kicking has been erratic: Croft plays too loose for a blindside but Worsely was poor in last game & Andy Powell keeps getting turned over. Martyn Williams not strong enough to play along side Wallace: its going to be tough !!!!

  9. Im welsh and to have 6 players in the team is great but i can see some of the calls have been close!williams is just that good week in week out that maybe he could have started? but o'gara had a great call to! his kicking on this tour and for the last couple of years has been second only to patterson! scotland players have not really shown in this years tour and that is sad but the simple fact is scottish rugby is going through what welsh rugby went through in the mid 90's! complete overhaul from top to bottom! they don't have a player that would get into the english, irish or welsh side? i think the lions can beat the bocks but i also think that if they don't drive into the contact area and keep giving away stupid pen's then they will get turned over in a big way, 30-40 points! the last game was a welcome to south africa! the way the tour should have gone from the start! i didn't like to see the shoulder barges but i liked the fact that powell bounced that guy onto his @#$% just to show him he wasn't scared lol!! come on the lions! the team is good! the record is perfect and the time is right!!!!!

  11. I dont understand, reading rugby papers leading upto the tour Euan Murray and Sheridan (Murray more so) was classed as the best props in the game!! Then leading upto the test before last week they were not even mentioned as starters in the daily papers.
I do agree that Monye should start and even Jones, but what about Hook, he seems to have helped whenever he has come onto the pitch?
Other than that and me thinking Vickery really shouldnt be there i agree...

Also well done to Croft, for a man who wasnt even on the original tour he is now starting the first test!!

  12. Having just noticed the teams announcement, it looks a fairly good combination of British stars and I hope they play out of their skins and make a good game of it, but, I have this feeling we're missing something in the back row, may be the selectors could given some thought to Ryan Jones, and the only occasions I've seen Vickery play in the past 12 months I think I've seen him take a ten minute rest on about four occasions. I hope he can keep clear of the yellow peril.
Just keep praying folk that the Green Juggernaut fail to turn up.

  16. Ok let's be honest. This is not the best lions squad we've ever had. Tha continual comparisons to the 97 tour are a little unfair, as that squad was astonishing. We have to accept the captain is not in the best of form, and his overall captaincy skills are questionable, but he's not going away, so come saturday we'll see how he fares. As for the rest of the selections, Geech is the man on the ground, so we need to trust him and his judgment and get behind the boys. They're there to play for all of us, so who cares where they're from. A win is all that matters. Jim.

Quiet unbelievable, no O'Gara, no Shaw, no Sheridan and no Hines. How can the selection be justified, too many welshmen, obviously picked by the top heavy welsh contingent. The proof will be in the pudding, if the Lions don't win in what can only be considered an easy tour then it will be a bigger disaster than 2005 when the Lions actually played good teams, I fear selection has been based on wo you know and not how well you have been performing.
