World number one Dinara Safina lost 7-5 7-5 to holder Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand in the WTA 'S-Hertogenbosch semi-finals.

TENNIS 2009 WTA 's-Hertogenbosch Russia's Dinara Safina, seen here on June 18, 2009, suffered a blow days ahead of Wimbledon when she was beaten 7-5, 7-5 by Thai star Tamarine Tanasugarn in the semi-finals of the WTA grasscourt tournament. - 0

"Today was a tough day for both of us because the wind kept changing direction," Tamarine said.

"It was a difficult match which could have gone either way."

The unseeded Tamarine, who also beat the Russian in last year's final, next faces Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium.

Wickmayer advanced with a 7-6 2-6 6-3 win over Italian Francesca Schiavone.

In the men's event, Dutch wild card entry Raemon Sluiter continued his impressive run as he defeated Spaniard Ivan Navarro 6-7 6-2 6-3 to reach Saturday's final.

"I still don't believe it," said Sluiter, who has returned to the tour from retirement. "Before the start of the tournament I thought I was in pretty good shape but I had no idea where I was on the ATP scale," Sluiter told RTL television.

Sluiter will meet Germany's Benjamin Becker, who beat countryman Rainer Schuettler 3-6 7-5 6-1.

The WTA rank her as the Number-One player; i have never ever, not on any single occasion said that she is the best player in the world - because it is patently obvious that she is NOT. Go back and check all my comments, all i am saying is that if she is ranked Number-One by the Tennis authorities then that is good enough for me; i accept it, why can't others.

I really do hope they remove you from these forums this time; you are nothing but a bully - all this simply because i criticise your favourite player . . . .you ought to be ashamed of yourself.

  6. I have to agree i'm afraid with Pat Cash in that Dinara is absolutely the number one player in the world, but she isn't the best player in the world. I hope for her she wins a major soon to keep the wolves from her door :-)

  7. Safina has no chance in at Wimbledon.she looks to her coach too much, today he was not there and she lost. She is an embarrassing No.1 who relies on coach too much.

  10. pity dear Dinara Safina has not spent the week at WIMBLEDON ~~ practising on the correct grass

resting preparing & relaxing ~~ renting a private house within waliking distance of the courts
just like earlier champs & potential winners

Now she only has a day or two on Wimbledon grass affter hectic journey with harassing airport searches

Ok, i appreciate your comment and i take it all on board.
Oh and thank you for your very polite and courteous contribution (i usually get answered with insults); admittedly, i am perhaps a little over zealous at times with my defence of Miss Safina, but i do abhor bullies and bullying - not that i am in any way accusing Mr barryjohnclarke of being a bully by the way.

From cameron w, on Fri 19 Jun 9:21PM
  12. Whilst I agree with you that Dinara is the true number 1 at the moment, i don't think its fair to pick on barryjohnclarke who has only ever trumpeted his own favourite two players without being nasty to any other girl on the tour, check his record, he is a decent bloke with a very promising professional tennis player daughter.

Give me ONE good reason why this girl should not be Number-One?
Now correct me if i'm wrong barryjohnclarke, but aren't rankings based on points accrued; so the person who accrues the most number of points goes to the top of the rankings, the person with the second highest number of points goes to Number-Two etc. etc.
Is that how it works barryjohnclarke - i'm pretty sure it is you know?
Anyway, the last time i looked, Dinara Safina was over one thousand points ahead of her nearest rival . . . . . ergo, based on the theory that points account for rankings . . . . she is RIGHTFULLY ranked as Number-One player in the World - i wish you and the rest of the sore losers would just stop behaving like spoilt brats and accept it.
If the ranking system is flawed then that is not Dinara Safina's fault; there is no need for all this unfouned nastiness towards her.

  14. Dinara, never mind girl; at least you have done your bit for the Women's Tour . . . you may have lost today, but you are STILL the World's Number-One . . . . FACT-a-MUNDO!
