Newell eyes four new players

Grimsby boss Mike Newell is hoping to sign at least four more new players this summer.

Newell wants a senior squad of around 18 first-team players for the forthcoming League Two campaign.

After tying up permanent deals for Barry Conlon and Joe Widdowson and seeing Danny Boshell and Jamie Clarke sign new contracts, the current total on the books at Blundell Park is 14.

"I would say I am looking for another four or five before the season starts. A number around the 18 mark is my target and we have 14 at present," Newell told the Grimsby Telegraph.

"I don't want too big a squad because then you get players who are just out of the picture and not involved and that is a waste. Last season when I arrived we had over 20 players and some were never going to play.

"I think it is wiser to have a smaller squad of players who are all competing for a place. We have plenty of younger players who can add to it if we need, like we saw on occasions last season."
