World Cup 2010 - Rooney slams England fans

Fri, 18 Jun 21:49:00 2010

A frustrated Wayne Rooney reacted to boos from his own fans as he trudged off the pitch following England's disappointing goalless draw with Algeria.

England were dismally poor in their second Group C game, which leaves them on two points with Slovenia to play on Wednesday. Slovenia have four points after their 2-2 draw with the USA, who have two. Algeria are on one.

Rooney was particularly ineffective as he stretched his barren scoring run for his country to 10 hours of football.

The dire performance prompted some sections of the travelling England support to boo their team as they left the pitch.

Rooney reacted and turned to say to the television cameras: "It's nice to see your own fans booing you."

Algeria, who had looked nervous in their opening 1-0 defeat by Slovenia, were good value for their draw and for long spells looked the sharper of the two teams.

England's final game against Slovenia is in Port Elizabeth while Algeria take on the USA in Pretoria, both on June 23.

If England win their last match they would go through, still possibly as group winners. A high-scoring draw could also be enough if the other game finished level.

Neither of those outcomes looked likely on Friday as from the first minute to the last, all over the pitch, they were awful.

  3. the performance of the english team shows that the best players in the EPL are all
foreigners. therefore why not offer british citizenship to the likes of evra, nani,
petr chec, fabregas, van-persie, drogba, malouda, kalou, bendtnar, torres, mascecrano,
toure, dindane, viera etc, then england will have a world cup class team.

  8. @ guck. What kind of a person uses the word 'gorilla' when referring to a player? You should be ashamed of yourself.

From kevin, on Sun 20 Jun 18:10
  9. England will not fare any better until Capello replaces the gorilla up front with the giraffe who, so far, has been given little opportunity to supply Rooney with the service he needs and deserves. Crouch was given just eight minutes yesterday and in that short time managed to show more spirit and determination ,( Glenn Johnson apart,) than the rest of the squad put together. Wake up Capello! You don't have a 'dream team' but what you do have are some 'team' players who will serve you much better than those looking , yourself included, for personal glory.

  10. Who the hell does Wayne Rooney think he is? When fans pay thousands of pounds to support their team, and then have to watch such a lethargic display which lacked passion, commitment and talent , they have every right to boo. Perhaps he should remember that those fans who have put him on a pedestal can just as easily knock him off it.

  11. England looked the worse team by far in the WC to date.
How sad to say that but they played without spirit, seemed scared
and in fear of making a mistake. No enjoyment in there play at all.
The fans were right to boo the team.
    Woeful!
I fear I will not live long enought to see a 1966 repeat :-(
Sad as I just missed the first.

  13. 200 years ago England was the best at everything. Now, unfortunately we aren't. Wake up and support the team for who they are. They are our representatives at one of the greatest sporting events in the world and a such need our support. Yes, they do play in the greatest league in the world but so do a lot of the other players there. Don't criticise those who do what you can't.
Also, the standard of written English here is unbelievable. Respect you country and your language and use it correctly please.

  14. I hate to see Egland defence LOVE to pass the ball back to goalkeeper.....they seem does not have confidence in controlling the ball and pushing it upward.
Don't blame Backenber for comment on England style of playing..U can bring in the highest paid coach in the world ...but English players are no good enough at dribbling & juggling the ball.

From mohd arshad a, on Sun 20 Jun 9:26
  15. It is better that Looney and co slammed themselves! These arrogant lads take pride in playing in what many people mistake to be 'the best league of the world', in having qualified with flying colours, in being popular the world over...Then what happened come moments of truth? Come on, a team whose internal affairs have been so scandalous and whose coach has dared not do anything about it? I'd be glad if this England squad packed and went home early before tickets were sold out and they would have to return by surface!

From Ideogen, on Sun 20 Jun 8:07
  16. After reading all the comments made its true it was the worst performance by an england team however changes must be made and the players and fans must unite and believe that something can be saved. So to the players believe in yourselves prove to the british people that you deserve the support and respect and put some pride and passion into the job you are being paid to do,Remember you earn respect you do not warrant it.Fail on wednesday and it will be a long time before the british fans will offer their true support.

  17. Rooney is such a knobhead anyway.........He is a great club player, but he ain't a top world class player, well we've seen the proof, he looks less than ordinary in a world stage, and the silly dumbass has the cheek to slag fans off for their booing...........Does the silly Scouse git realise .those fans pay his wages, if it wasn't for them he'd be running around in a white van selling carpets or doing dodgy building work like the rest of his traveller relations.........So button it and do what your paid to do................

From Johno, on Sun 20 Jun 4:23
  18. How much money did it cost England fans to go all that way and see that performance, and how long does it take Wayne Rooney to earn the same amount? Maybe he can afford to pay to refund the costs that all those supporters had to pay out.
Fans don't travel thousands of miles deliberately to jeer the team. The booing only comes when these massively overpaid superstars seem incapable of proving that they are worth what they earn.

From Tony S, on Sun 20 Jun 3:24
  19. we may not have lost 1232 , but we did not win
3 draws will not be enough , why must we always wait until the last game ...then rely on other results going our way . we should have had 2 wins by now and certain of qualification ...do they not realise that we as a nation deserve more from our vastly overpaid and often overrated footballers

From Martin, on Sun 20 Jun 2:57
  20. I,m still playing at aged 45 , Managers player of the year this year for my club . A real old fashioned footballer not afraid to tackle ...reckon I could have played better than half of that so called english team
