Martin wins Giro della Toscana
Ireland's Dan Martin won the Giro della Toscana in a sprint finish, overhauling home rider Mauro Santambrogio in the final few metres.
Sprinting into a headwind, the Garmin-Cervelo rider Martin profited from a fine job by Santambrogio's BMC team in hauling in a breakaway on the final lap in Arezzo.
“Martin Kohler and Ivan Santaromita did a fantastic job in closing a two-minute gap to 25 seconds once we got onto the finish circuit,” BMC Racing Team Assistant Director Max Sciandri said.
Miguel Rubiano Chavez and Emanuele Sella came third and fourth at the end of a gruelling 196km test that took the riders nearly five hours.
The race saw the return to action of Daniele Colli (Geox-Tmc) after recovering from a tumour in his knee.
