Warrington coach James Lowes paid tribute to the character of his side after they clawed their way back from 18-6 down at half-time to secure a 19-18 win at Huddersfield.

A first-ever hat-trick of tries by Huddersfield full-back Leroy Cudjoe was all in vain as the visitors hit back to level matters with the aid of tries from Simon Grix and Paul Rauhihi before stand-off Lee Briers struck the winning drop goal seven minutes from the end.

It completed a hat-trick of engage Super League victories over Huddersfield this year and made it six wins in seven matches under Lowes to strengthen the Wolves' play-off prospects.

"At half-time I was still confident we were going to create chances and we did," said Lowes. "We were slightly off our game across the board but we scraped a win.

"Our energy levels were down but we've got great spirit and character in the side - I've said that since I took over. We just need to be better performance-wise if we finish in the top six.

"We generally need to up our game slightly for the challenges ahead and I'm sure we will. We need to be on our game in the next six or seven weeks."

It had earlier looked so rosy for Huddersfield after they dominated the first half, largely through the efforts of the 21-year-old Cudjoe, who had scored one try in his first 12 appearances for the club but trebled his tally within the first quarter.

"I've got to give them A for effort but C in the area of smartness," said joint caretaker coach Paul Anderson.

"We started the game very well. We were very patient in everything we were doing and building pressure with simple plays.

"But in the second half we didn't continue to do things we did in first half. Warrington are a decent team and, when they start rolling, they can be difficult to stop.

"Warrington are always going to score points. We conceded 19 points as opposed to 46 last week. We asked for a response and I believe we got it."

Huddersfield's right-wing pair of Kevin Brown and Martin Aspinwall were both denied tries by video referee Ashley Klein as the game began to slip away from the home side and Luke Robinson and Chris Thorman both failed with drop-goal attempts.

"These are things that happen throughout the year," said Anderson. "They could have gone the other way but you win some and lose some."
