Meehan Sings Angel's Praises

Sat 19 Jul, 08:09 AM

Brian Meehan capped a memorable week, highlighted by Red Rocks' New York victory, by sending out Whispering Angel to slam his rivals in division one of the Highclere Thoroughbred Racing Maiden Stakes at Newbury.

Making a quick reappearance after running at Newmarket's July meeting, the 13-8 favourite did the business with the minimum of fuss under Alan Munro and skated across the line two and three-quarter lengths to the good.

Meehan said: "He has always been a very good horse and you always want to see them produce like that.

"I'll wait a while with him now as it is just nine days since he ran at Newmarket. There are plenty of races for him later on and he will step up to a mile."

Atlantic Sport's lofty reputation took a knock after he failed to fire as expected and went under to Easy Target in the Jupiter Unit Trust Managers Conditions Stakes.

Mick Channon's one-time Classic candidate was a warm order at odds of 4-6 to build on his promising seasonal bow over the course and distance two weeks ago.

All seemed to be going to plan for much of the seven-furlong race, with Richard Hughes even allowing himself a brief glance through his legs as the three-year-old travelled powerfully two furlongs out.

But his mount did not find what was required at the business end of affairs and lost out to Bryan Smart's 10-1 winner by three-quarters of a length.

Channon said of his Group One-entered colt: "Richard said they couldn't go fast enough for him early, but he didn't find what you thought he might.

"I don't know what to say really. We'll take home, have a look and start again as he does have a lot of ability."

Smart's assistant Kevin Edmunds added of the winner: "He settled well behind a strong pace and he will stay a mile.

"Now he's won at this level we might look for a Group Three for him."

Jane Chapple-Hyam saddled her first juvenile winner of the year in division two of the maiden and is now eyeing serious backend engagements for 25-1 winner Patrician's Glory.

Chapple-Hyam said: "He has always shown us a lot but I don't have a great number of horses for him to work with.

"That was his first time racing in a crowd so he will learn and come on for that.

"We do think a lot of him so we'll enter him at Newmarket in the Middle Park and the Dewhurst."

Ballyalla, backed down to 6-1 from 8s, rewarded market support in the Hillwood Stud EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes when running out a tidy winner under Atlantic Sport's rider.

After breaking well, the daughter of Mind Games raced handily and stretched clear to hold off the challenge of Perfect Pride by half a length.

Trainer Richard Hannon said: "Richard said last time when she ran over seven furlongs to drop her back to six and she would win, and that is what happened."
