Terry Venables believes Cristiano Ronaldo's attempts to secure a move to Real Madrid this summer have been a slap in the face for those who battled for players' rights.
The former England manager was involved in the campaign to abolish the £20-a-week maximum wage - something the Professional Footballers' Association, led by Jimmy Hill, managed to achieve in 1961.
And Venables admits he has been infuriated by the Manchester United winger's reported desire to secure a "dream" transfer to Real, and in particular Ronaldo's agreement with FIFA president Sepp Blatter's claim that he is the victim of "modern slavery".
"What Ronaldo is doing completely cuts through the principles we fought for. And it hurts," Venables wrote in The Sun.
"Not one of us ever imagined players could be given a contract and then be free to walk away at a whim, no matter how many years were still remaining. We wouldn't have dreamt of asking for such a thing.
"Ronaldo has four years left on a highly lucrative deal that he was overjoyed to sign 15 months ago.
"What on earth gives him the right, now, to just throw it in the air and say 'I've had enough, I'm off'?
"It's selfish, it's immoral, it's potentially devastating for the game as a whole. It's wrong. And it's only any good for Ronaldo."
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson appeared to put an end to the Ronaldo transfer saga last night when he insisted the Portugal international would remain at Old Trafford.

Would love to see Ronaldo being loaned out to someone like Peterborough for 6 months, that will teach the greasy winker a bit of humility...T w a t!!! Then really piss of Real Madrid and sell him to Barcalona!!!
Lets just forget about this whole thing with Ronaldo. Yes he's been selfish and disrepectful. But at the end of the day he will be playing this year. And any true utd fan know's that deep down he has helped utd a lot, but he will eventually leave. Lets be honest, we've always knowen that he's wanted to play for Real. So in the mean time, just forget about it and move on- Utd to win the Treble this year
I back Ferguson and Venables on this one. ronaldo signed a contract and that was his choice and now he just has to live with his decision. Alternative should be to require him to PERSONALLY pay £5million for each year of his outstanding contract to MUFC upon their agreement to let him be in breach of contract
WHAT IM GETTING SICK AND TIRED OF IS PEOPLE ON THIS FORUM SAYING "IM SO SICK AND TIRED OF THIS RONALDO THING...OR...IM BORED OF THIS WHOLE RONALDO THING" and yet they then go on to write a load of other stuff along side it! if you are so bored by this all THEN WHY COMMENT ON IT TIME AND TIME AGAIN!!!
And TV was never motivated by money?
i dont know why this ronaldo issue is becoming too much a discussion. i am truely getting fed up with it. we are celebrating ronaldo now because manu won the CL after he put manu in a very bad situation for his bragad penalty miss. if not that JT (not john thomas please) quickly turned things arround for manu. let this ingrate leave manu so that everybody will get some sleep afterall. he is not god trust me he isnt. since beckam, nestelroy and heinze left, manu have won the league back-to-back and CL and this will continue even after CR. the arrogance must stop. the self importance must be crushed. SAF should give real madrid his bill and allow him to go finish. anyway gunners for life
Didn't Cry Baby Ronaldo try to pull a Real Madrid move after the World Cup two years ago and Fergie told him no. Since then he has signed a new contract which he is now wanting to renege on. If we can get 80 million for him I say let the "LITTLE @#$%" go.
i can remember when ronaldo said" it was a dream to sign for united" i wish he would wake up and stop dreaming. the grass is not always greener.
It's quite funny how Venables writes for The Sun. I mean, technically, he's a columnist, but I've never read such tosh in my entire life. The only thing I read of him was when Soclari had just been confirmed to become Chelsea manager, and Venables, in his 'column', was saying that the next best thing Chelsea should do is bid for Ronaldo and sign him, simply because they had the pulling power of Scolari going from his national team boss to being the coach of a rival club.
I know McClaren wasn't any good, but maybe if Venables wasn't writing for such a @#$% red-top, maybe it would have been England against Turkey in the Quarter Finals of Euro, or Spain against England in the semis....
Why all the fuss ? Its all press talk Ronaldo has not yet come out and said he wants to leave.Wait until he says what he wants to do.
YOU CAN LEAD A HORSE TO WATER, BUT YOU CANNOT MAKE IT DRINK. LET HIM DO A BECKHAM
RONALDO is a fookin little girl piss him off to the 2nd rate Real Madrid who really cares // RONALDO is over rated and a very selfish footballer -- and i am a man utd fan
the devastation has already begun, more and more of this @#$% is set to happen.
It's selfish, it's immoral, it's RONALDO
