Flynn urges Wales to finish job

Tue 19 Aug, 04:45 PM

Wales Under-21 boss Brian Flynn wants his players to put the seal on a brilliant qualifying campaign with victory over Romania on Wednesday.Wales face Romania at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground (kick-off 6pm) knowing that a victory will send them into October's play-offs.

They still have one more game in their group after this, away to Romania next month, and need three points to clinch their group.

Clearly Flynn does not want to be waiting until the last moment to achieve that goal.

He said: "This squad is on the brink of something big. Wales have not qualified for anything since 1958. But this is not just a sudden thing, we have been planning for this - John Toshack and myself - four the last four years.

"Now we want to round off an excellent campaign and clinch the group in front of our own fans. We do not want to be relying on getting anything in Romania."

Flynn will be without Cardiff's Joe Ledley, who has a back injury, and West Ham's Jack Collison, two players who were critical to his plans.

But he is confident that Wales can clinch the win they need.

He said: "Romania are still unbeaten in the group, but we have shown by beating France what we can do."

Senior boss Toshack has allowed Flynn the pick of his squad to bolster the under-21s, and Toshack said: "Brian and me both believe that the Under-21 game is more important to the future of Welsh football than our game against Georgia the same night.

"We desperately want to see these lads qualify. They will be playing together for 10 years and we hope they will qualify for a lot more tournaments.

"That is why it is important that they get the experience of a competition finals early in their careers. It is something none of the senior players for several decades have ever experienced."

And Flynn sees the real goal as reaching the World Cup finals in South Africa in 2010.

He added: "We have been planning for a long time and are looking forward to the World Cup in 2010, the key to everything is qualifying for South Africa. That is what is uppermost in our minds.

"This game against Romania is our cup final."

And Flynn is looking to the strike partnership of Manchester City's Ched Evans and Wolves new boy Sam Vokes to fire Wales to victory.

He said: "This side has been evolving since we won in Northern Ireland in February 2007, I saw then that we had two exciting young strikers.

"And both players have done themselves proud when they got into the senior squad. They will be important for us for many years to come.

"But we must now stop the talking and win the match. It is vital for our future, so we need to give everything to make sure we qualify for the play-offs later in the year."
