Spurs set to hold out on Dimi deal

Tue 19 Aug, 01:01 PM

Tottenham appear in no hurry to force a deal with Manchester United for Dimitar Berbatov despite the striker making a formal transfer request. It is understood that Berbatov handed in his request on Friday to sporting director Damien Comolli and chairman Daniel Levy, the day before he was named on the bench in the 2-1 Premier League defeat at Middlesbrough.

Earlier in the summer, Levy feared Berbatov would have a negative influence on the dressing room after making it clear he wanted to leave for Manchester United.

United had a bid of £20.5million rejected last month and have not made another formal offer, although Tottenham have insisted they do not want to sell.

However, the transfer saga has entered a crucial stage following Berbatov's request, followed by comments on his arrival for international duty with Bulgaria.

"I'm now in Tottenham but no-one can disagree with me wanting to follow my dream," said Berbatov, who told reporters he wanted everything sorted by the end of the week. Tottenham's stance means that is unlikely to happen.

The 27-year-old, as captain of Bulgaria, was expected to fulfil media duties ahead of the friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Wednesday but did not face the cameras.

Berbatov's agent Emil Dantchev said: "We have two more weeks until the end of the transfer window and I think this will be the most important week. I read Alex Ferguson's statement that he wants another striker and I hope that this striker is Dimitar Berbatov."

The player himself, meanwhile, has already started steeping himself in United folklore after he took his demotion to the bench with noticeable frustration.

"If I had been laughing when I was on the bench, people would say I was an idiot," he said.

"Eric Cantona never smiled, but I don't know if anyone ever asked him why he didn't look happier."

  1. I think if berba wants to go let him follow his dream ha ha we'll survive as we always have, as for chelsea, you may well win prem but such a soulless club just remember if abramovich loses interest you sink without trace.

  2. I wouldnt be to happy if i was a Spurs fan, an unhappy player in your camp isnt to great. Doesnt matter if he stays or goes Spurs wont win much this year. They are just like Newcastle, West Ham , Everton, they are just middle table clubs who are good on their day but cant attract any really big names. Eto'o, Pavlychenko, S.Vagner Love all said Spurs werent a big enough club. i agree, i have fun in the middle of the table.
    Up Chelsea

  5. There are many people who should learn from Berbs... like one CR7... you see, if you wanna f off, then go up to your boss, and formally hand in a request that says you wanna go.. then see what happens. Berbs, you're a man (excuse the pun) :)

  6. Keith, United never publicly courted Berbatov. They made a bid for him in private, Fergie refused to mention him by name, and a bunch of journos re-interpreted his remarks and printed them as if they were quotes. He's made no secret that he's been looking for a striker, but out of the 3 or 4 he says he's looked at, he hasn't named one.

  7. hunni, I think your right about Chelsea. They will win the league. I hope so anyway, i'd rather anyone but the mancs

  8. Clement L, Spurs have always specified quite loudly that they don't want to sell, trouble is, unlike Real, Man U don't know how to back off. If Fergie had gone to Spurs and asked to speak to Berba, they would have been told to back off, but they did'nt. They just made it public that they wanted him and thats why he now wants to leave. If Man U had done the right thing in the first place, Berba would'nt have been any the wiser. But no the mancs just could'nt do the right thing could they.
