Austria's former overall World Cup champion Renate Goetschl has announced her retirement.

"After 17 years on the World Cup circuit....I'm ending my career," the 34-year-old said on her website.

"I want to dedicate more time to my private life in the future."

Speculation had been mounting about Goetschl's future after a loss of form and a disappointing performance at February's world championships where she finished 24th in the downhill and did not finish the super-G.

Goetschl, won 46 World Cup races and was overall champion in 2000. She won Olympic silver and bronze in Salt Lake City in 2002 and gold medals at the world championships in 1997 (combined), 1999 (downhill) and 2007 (team).
