Eurosport - Wed, 19 Aug 21:58:00 2009
Day five of the World Championships as it happened as four gold medals were awarded and Usain Bolt moved into the 200m final.
22:00: That ends another thrilling day in Berlin. But it will only get better as tomorrow we have the men's 200m final and Usain Bolt amongst other things. Join us for more text commentary from nine tomorrow morning or watch all the action on the Eurosport Player.
21:45: The decathlon is finally wrapped up for the day and Oleksiy Kasyanov keeps the overall lead by producing a personal best of 47.85 in the 400m. That leaves him on 4555 points. Next comes Yunior Diaz of Cuba who jumps up the second with a 46.15 in the 400m. He is on 4512 just one point ahead of long-time leader Trey Hardee. Defending champion Roman Sebrle has dropped to seventh and pre-event favourite Leonel Suarez is only eight.
21:00: The men's high jump in the decathlon proved to be an absolute epic and it is only know that the competitors are out doing the 400m. Oleksiy Kasyanov of Ukraine produced a personal best of 2.05 for 850 points which was enough for him to take the overall lead ahead of Trey Hardee who could manage just 794. A superb 2.11 from defending champion Roman Sebrle sees him move up to fourth overall.
20:40: Caster Semenya HAS DESTROYED THE FIELD - this South African is only 18 but has completely destroyed the opposition in a time of 1.55.46. The gender question will just get louder after a performance like this. BRONZE FOR JENNY MEADOWS OF BRITAIN - she came very late near the end to nick a medal ahead of Yuliya Krevsun of Ukraine and she very nearly got the silver ahead of Janeth Jepkosgei Busienei.
20:35: Time for the women's 800m final. Caster Semenya is the favourite but as we stated earlier she is also going to be the subject of a gender test. Jennifer Meadows and Marilyn Okoro go for Britain.
20:30: GOLD FOR GERMANY IN THE DISCUS!!!! Richard Harting produces a throw of 69.43 with his final throw. A personal best to win gold in front of his home fans. Piotr Malachowski will have to settle for silver and Gerd Kanter takes the bronze.
20.20: GOLD FOR Brigitte Foster-Hylton in 12.51!! ANOTHER SPRINT GOLD FOR JAMAICA. She did know she had won until it came up on screen. A bronze for Jamaica too with Delloreen Ennis-London taking that. Priscilla Lopes-Schliep of Canada took silver. Harper just did not hurdle well after a poor start and was nowhere and a GREAT performance from Ireland's Derval O'Rourke who finished fourth in an Irish record time of 12.67.
20:15: Here we go with the women's 100m hurdles final. Can Olympic champion Dawn Harper add World gold? A reminder how they qualified.
1. Dawn Harper (U.S.) 12.48 seconds Q; 2. Brigitte Foster-Hylton (Jamaica) 12.54 Q; 3. Perdita Felicien (Canada) 12.58 Q; 4. Priscilla Lopes-Schliep (Canada) 12.60 Q; 5. Delloreen Ennis-London (Jamaica) 12.64 Q; 6. Sally McLellan (Australia) 12.66 Q; 7. Derval O'Rourke (Ireland) 12.73 Q; 7=. Virginia Powell (U.S.) 12.73 Q
20:10: Piotr Malachowsk has thrown 69.15 to cement his lead. It looks like it might be another great night for Poland.
20:00: Gerd Kanter has just moved into the bronze position in the discus with a throw of 66.88 in the fourth round. That pushes two-time Olympic champion Alekna out of the medals for now. Piotr Malachowski still in the gold medal position thanks to his opening throw.
19:50 There is a bit of delay in action on the track as the decathlon high jump is STILL going on. That mean's the decathlon 400m will now not take place until after the regular track program is finished at 20:35 British time.
19:40: Malachowski still leads the discus with 68.77. Next comes Harting with 68.25 and Litunaia's Virgilijus Alekna (66.36) has the bronze at the moment. Favourite Gerd Kanter is out of the medals in fourth.
19:30: GOLD FOR Youssef Saad Kamel of Bahrain - who you might remember as Gregory Konchellah. He has won gold like his dad Billy did twice over 800m. Deresse Mekonnen of Ethopia took the silver and Lagat got the bronze. Terrible tactics from the 1,500m specialistd who left it too late before turning up the heat. That turned it into a sprint finish and it was more akin to an 800m race (which Saad Kamel is a specialist in). Kiprop charged late but it was too late and he finished fourth and out of the medals.
19:25: Underway in the 1,500m - it won't be a quick race...
19:20: Coming up in five minutes is the first final of the night and it is the men's 1,500m. Asbel Kiprop of Kenya is the big favourite. He won silver in Beijing but could yet be awarded gold since the winner Rashid Ramzi has since tested positive for doping. Defending champion Bernard Lagat leads the chasing pack. Former 800m runner Amine Laalou of Morocco is another to watch.
19:20: Double Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown cruises to victory in the final 200m heat in a time of 23.10. Britain's Emily Freeman came next in a time of 23.10 and Belgium's Olivia Borlee got the third spot.
19.15: The men's discus has just begun. Gerd Kanter of Estonia is the favourite but the home fans will be behind Robert Harting. Piotr Malachowski of Poland has laid down the early marker though with a national record throw of 68.77.
19:15 Mothersill takes it with consummate ease, winning the penultimate heat in 22.69 with McLoughlin in second and Jones-Ferrette in third. Mothersill will be the one to watch in the later rounds.
19:10 The penultimate heat of the women's 200m is about to commence, with Mothersill possessing a personal best of 22.39 out in lane seven, while McLaughlin of Jamaica in five.
19:05 Marshevet Hooker - fifth in the Olympics last year - wins the next heat in 22.51. Veteran Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie of the Bahamas who won a bronze at the Athens Olympics and a gold at the Edmonton Worlds way back in 2001 came next. The final spot was taken by Eleni Artymata in a Cypriot record time of 22.83.
19:00 Allyson Felix who is going for her third consecutive World title has very little trouble winning the third 200m in 22.88. New Zealand's Monique Williams came next with a national record of 22.96. Tameka Williams of St. Kitt's and Nevis got the third spot.
18:50: Muna Lee of America, Trinidad's Kelly-Ann Baptiste and Russia's Yulia Gushchina all move on with ease in the second hea t. Lee won the race in a season best time of 22.76 but she has run as low as 22.01 in the past.
18:45 Jamaica's Simone Facey wins the opening heat in 22.84. America's ChaRonda Williams and France's Johanna Danois take the other automatic spots.
18:45: Next up we have a glut of women's 200m first round races - six in total. The top three in each plus six fastest losers go through.
18:35: Mullins went out very quickly in that second semi-final but had to settle for second with Spearmon coming home to win in 20.14. American Charles Clark is third in a season best time of 20.27 and Azerbaijan's Ramil Guliyev gets the final spot in 20.28. Paul Hession (20.48) was sixth and Devonish (20.62) was seventh.
18:30: Wallace Spearmon has won silver and bronze in this event at the worlds in the past. He is the quality runner in this second semi-final while Steve Mullins of Jamaica is also very quick. Britain's Marlon Devonish and Ireland's Paul Hession are also in this semi-final.
18:25: It is another cruise from Bolt as he does a casual jog in 20.08.Edward got the second spot in 20.22 with Crawford next in 20.35. The fourth spot went to Frenchman David Alerte in a season's best time of 20.45. 19-year-old German Robert Hering just missed out in fifth.
18:20: Coming up in five minutes is the first semi-final of the men's 200m and Bolt goes in this one. America's Shawn Crawford is the only other man in this semi who has gone under 20.00 although his best run this year was only 20.19. Panama's Alonso Edward has run 20.00 this season. Top four go through. As a meerkat once said: Simples.
18:05: Confirmation of the times of the eight man who made it to the final of the men's 400m :1. LaShawn Merritt (U.S.) 44.37 seconds Q; 2. Rennie Quow (Trinidad and Tobago) 44.53 Q; 3. Jeremy Wariner (U.S.) 44.69 Q; 4. Michael Bingham (Britain) 44.74 Q; 5. Leslie Djhone (France) 44.80 Q; 6. David Gillick (Ireland) 44.88 Q; 7. Chris Brown (Bahamas) 44.95 Q; 8.Tabarie Henry (Virgin Islands (U.S.)) 44.97 Q
18:00: Harper wins in 12.48 - VERY FAST - that is her personal best. Sally McLean second in 12.66 and how about this from Ireland's Derval O'Rourke? A great time of 12.73 sees her get a fastest loser spot and that also knocks out Damu Cherry . Sarah Claxton was off the pace in 13.21 which saw her finish last.
18:00: Olympic champion and silver medallist in this final semi-final. Dawn Harper of America won gold in Beijing with Australia's Sally McLean taking the silver. Some local interest in this one too. Ireland's Derval O'Rourke (who is a former World Indoor Championships) and Britain's Sarah Claxton both compete.
17:55: Foster-Hylton and Felicien dominated that race but Cherry really struggled in the second half of the race and could be in trouble. Foster-Hylton won it in 12.54 with Cherry third in a time of 12.76. That is below Virginia Powell's time in the first semi so she needs the third place finisher in the final heat to be slower than her or she is out.
17:50: Cherry and Foster-Hylton going in this second semi-final and they are split in lane three by former World Champion Perdita Felicien who will look to become the second Canadian to make the final.
17:45: Lopes-Schliep wins in 12.61 but she was run very close by Ennis-London.Virginia Powell of the US was a bit off her PB in third in a time of 12.73 and she will have to wait and see whether she gets on of the fastest loser spots.
17:45: Lopes-Schliep goes in this first of three semi-finals - she looked very fast in the last round. Delloreen Ennis-London another one to watch.
17:40: Next up the women's 100m hurdles semi-finals and this race looks wide open. Lolo Jones, who was favourite in Beijing last year before falling in the final, did not even qualify from the US trials so she is working for Eurosport. Canadian Priscilla Lopes-Schliep (bronze in Beijing), Olympic champion Dawn Harper, Sally McLellan (silver in Beijing), American Damu Cherry, and Commonwealth champion Brigitte Foster-Hylton will all fancy their chances.
17:35: Time for the home fans to get their signing voices working. It is the medal ceremony for the javelin which was won by home favourite Steffi Nerius at the tender age of 37.
17:30: A slow semi-final that is won in 44.95 by Brown which is slower than Gillick's 44.88 in finishing fourth in the first heat. Tabarie Henry of the United States Virgin Islands gets the second spot and Djohne (44.80) and Ireland's Gillick (44.88) have also made the final as the fastest losers.
17:30: Chris Brown (the Bahamian athlete not the woman beating "musician") is the biggest name in this final semi-final. He has finished fourth in three previous world finals.
17:25: Merrit cruises into final in 44.37 - he looked so good there and a good chunk of change faster than Wariner. That is the fastest time in the world this year and he did it at a canter. Trinidad's Renny Quow had a shocking first 200 but then stormed back to run a personal best of 44.53 to take the second spot. Djohne and Gillick remain the two fastest losers. Rooney had an absolute shocker way back in seventh and is out.
17:25: Second men's semi-final has Olympic champion Merrit but also Britain's Martyn Rooney who finished sixth in Beijing. Can a second Brit make the final after the great run by Bingham?
17:20: Warnier wins in a time of 44.70. He left plenty in the tank there too. Great race from Bingham - 44.74 - that smashes his person best. He gets the second automatic spot in the final. Leslie Djohne (44.80) and Gillick (44.88) come next and will hope for fastest loser spots.
17:15: First action on the track is the semi-finals of the men's 400m - there will be three of these. Jeremy Wariner racing in the first and of course he will be expected to showdown against Olympic champion LeShawn Merrit when the final comes around. Ireland's David Gillick, who could be an outsider for a medal, and American-born Brit Michael Bingham also in this one.
17:10: Big story just breaking - South Africa's 800m favourite Caster Semenya is undergoing a gender verification test after her improved form this year raised an alarm with athletics officials.
17:05: Before the action kicks-off though we get a rendition of God Save the Queen for Great Britain's Phillips Idowu who won the men's triple jump last night by beating Olympic champion Nelson Evora.
17:00: First up his the high jump section of the decathlon though. American Trey Hardee was in control after the first three events having netted 2,814 points. Cuban Leonel Suarez, the big favourite in the absence of Olympic champion Bryan Clay, was in 14th position after failing to even get close to his personal best in the 100m and long jump events. World championships men's decathlon standings after event three (shot put) in Berlin on Wednesday Shot Put Overall
Current top 10: 1. Trey Hardee (U.S.) 2814 points; 2. Oleksiy Kasyanov (Ukraine) 2789; 3. Aleksandr Pogorelov (Russia) 2695; 4. Yunior Diaz (Cuba) 2689; 5. Roman Sebrle (Czech Republic) 2623; 6. Ashton Eaton (U.S.) 2612; 7. Yordani Garcia (Cuba) 2577; 8. Andres Raja (Estonia) 2568; 9. Pascal Behrenbruch (Germany) 2550; 10. Norman Mueller (Germany) 2541
16:45: Welcome to what should be another exciting evening at the World's Athletic Championships in Berlin. Four more gold medals will be decided tonight. The 1,500m and discus in the men's. And 800m and the wide open 100 hurdles in the women's. There is also the prospect of seeing a certain Jamaican sprinter in the men's 200m semi-finals. His name escapes me though.

Bolt is the fastest man in the world - no doubt - Caster Semenya is the fastest junior MAN in the world. Nobody should be surprised at the demanded gender test byt he IAAF - it so obviously is not a woman - a woman doesn't have an @#$% like that nor does she have a face like that or a lunch box joggling around in the shorts when she is running - UNMASK THAT TRANNY BLOKE NOW !!!
Caster Semenya is a man she runs like one looks like one and i'm preety sure a woman isn't supposed to have a @#$% sticking out of her tights
GO JAMAICA!
Re: Men's 400m. I'm sure that the fourth place runner in Michael Bingham's semi-final had a faster time than Chris Brown and Tabarie Henry. Why is he excluded from the final?
Joe Campion
