Mauro Santambrogio won the Trois Vallees Varesines in Capione d'Italia, the first part of the Trittico Lombardo race series in Italy.

The Lampre rider broke clear over the final 250m of the 189km route to get ahead of compatriot Francesco Masciarelli (Acqua & Sapone) and Russian rider Alexandre Botcharov (Katusha), who finished in second and third places respectively, 20 seconds clear of the chasing pack.

"Today I had a huge desire to win," said Santambrogio. "The Tour of Portugal didn't go my way and I wanted to do something here.

"It has been five years since my last win. It is an emotional win, near my home in Como where there are lots of people who love me."

The second part of the Trittico Lombardo takes place on Wednesday with the Coppa Agostoni with the third and final part, the Coppa Bernocchi, on Thursday.
