Vettel, who became the youngest driver to win a grand prix in the wet at Monza for Toro Rosso at the weekend, joins Red Bull next season and with his future team on the RB4.

The majority of the teams took part after the 'Young Driver Day' on Tuesday, with eight cars speeding around the 4.423km track.

The squads focused upon developing aerodynamic packages and set-up configurations ahead of the final four races of the season, while some also tried out their Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems to be used from 2009.

Klien recorded a best time of 1:19.537 in the F1.08.

Young Swiss Sebastien Buemi, who is competing to take over from Vettel in the Toro Rosso STR3 next season, was third quickest.

Gary Paffett tested for McLaren and put the MP4-23 fourth in the lists ahead of Kamui Kobayashi for Toyota and Luca di Grassi for Renault.

Alex Wurz, 1.5 seconds off the pace with Honda, was two seconds faster than Kazuki Nakajima in the Williams.

Testing continues until Friday.

Day two testing times:

1. Christian Klien (BMW Sauber, F1.08) 1:19.537 - 84 laps
