Mosley wants standard engines

Eurosport - Fri, 19 Sep 10:29:00 2008

FIA president Max Mosley has said he wants all Formula One teams to use the same engine to cut spiralling costs.

2008 Monaco GP Mosley - 0

Such a move would dramatically alter the traditional landscape of a sport that has long depended upon technological competition between teams as one of its prime areas of interest.

However Mosley believes that a common engine is a practical prospect and may even be welcomed by the squads as spending becomes "irrational".

"I know that the big constructors will say to me that 'if there is to be a single engine, I want it to be mine', but in the real world, if a racing company can buy a cheaper engine then it will do so - without doubt," he told L'Equipe.

He added that he was in favour of standard suspensions and gearboxes.

There have been past calls for a more level playing field as heavily-backed outfits such as McLaren-Mercedes and Ferrari have dominated recently, while in the ongoing campaign Super Aguri became the latest team to fold due to massive running costs.

Renault won the two World Championship titles prior to last season with Spaniard Fernando Alonso.

Despite his stance over engines, Mosley does not agree with the French team's boss Flavio Briatore that there ought to be a single KERS device in use when the kinetic energy-recovering rules come into force in 2009.

"This shows the inability of team owners to think logically," he said. "Only when the KERS system has been extensively tested can we think about a common usage."

A1GP, a competitor to F1, uses a standard engine, while motorsport's premier class has worked to downgrade the spending on feeder series GP2 from next year to 250,000 euros per car from 1.5m euros.

The renamed championship will be known as F2.

  1. OK, we're all agreed that Mad Max has to go but: given the current turmoil in the global financial markets, a number of former F1 sponsors will not be kicking in the big bucks in future which will mean that F1 will need to find ways to reduce the presently incredibly high costs.

I do not favour a standard engine (Although I do love my Hemi) because that would make F1 look like A1 GP or whatever it's called and that's about as interesting as Al Gore.

Instead, I agree with previous posts that a much lower than the current average team spending cap be put in place AND, that the technical rules be relaxed to allow for greater individual team innovation. I agree that policing the spending cap would not be easy initially but over time, it could be made to work.

The benefits of doing those things would be more innovation and because of the lower entry fee, more teams on the grid which will bring in a greater number of drivers which will increase the interest for the fans.

Or I guess we could go along with Mad Max and put a Briggs and Stratton motor in each of the current cars.

  3. Why is anyone surprised that the power mad dwarf and his masochistic mate continue to struggle to save their dying pantomime; in their endeavour to join the mega-rich 'wealth creators' they have converted F1 from a sport into tv entertainment and in so doing, it seems some would believe, have 'saved' F1!
Some of those guys should take a look at the sport before the age of the dreadful duo to see just how much the sport of F1 has been saved. There were processions in those days; but not because the cars themselves prevented overtaking. There were occasions when the pit stops changed the face of the race by allowing someone to be overtaken; but they were the minority, not the majority of overtaking events. There were surprises in the outcome of some races; but not primarily because of activity, appeals and penalties awarded after the event or off the track altogether.
I could go on; but won't, as I must be boring you and it won't change anything and is just depressing me

  5. Why, at the pinnacle of motorsport, would it be such a fantastic idea to turn it into a 1 brand event? isnt that what A1GP is for? At then end of the day i can see the thought that it would be a good idea, feeder teams such as Force India, Toro Rosso, would suit such a rule change, but when it comes to the main manufacturers all they will do is spend even more of their mass wealth of budget on aerodynamics which is where the feeder teams are struggling with anyways. In my personal opinion, there shouldnt really be any rule changes to Engines, electronics or aerodynamics, or budgets for that matter, it should be left open to each team to decide what they can afford to spend, this is competition were on about, not lets just all get along and help each other out. This is the peak of racing, this is where the advancements are meant to be made, not halted. If certain teams like super aguri cant afford to race then they shouldnt, and maybe more manufacturers should look to entering the ring of Formula 1, i sure as hell would love to see Lamborghini enter into F1 and Porsche and lotus again and even Nissan, Mazda and maybe some american brands like Dodge/chrysler and or Chevrolet. At the end of the day all these manufacturers race in other events, Le-mans for instance, maybe its about time the put up a fight at the top of the ladder in motor sports.

  7. What a spanking good idea from Max. I wonder if he will be able to whip up any support? Or maybe he'll feel bound by the usual, more uniform rules. Although he perhaps feels that domination (by one team) is a bad a idea after all?

  14. ginger,
Don't get me started on Max and Bernie! I think, many years past, they did alot to increase F1 as the greatest sport in the world, but in their greed and arrogance, they have brought the sport to near ruin. What I can't understand is how these huge corporations and uber rich team owners/principles let those two old fools walk all over them. It would be interesting to see, if a rival series was seriously discussed or even planned, which current F1 teams would jump ship and join.

  15. refer post #100...

Lets take a quick poll... (vote via the up and down thumbs)

Whoever agreed that Max is an idiot and should resign... give a thumbs up...

Whoever agreed that Max is doing the right thing... give a thumbs down...

    * so basically 39 says Max should resign... and only 1 say he is right...

maybe that one person is Max himself? or one of his associates?

Someone should launch an online poll to canvas the public opinion about Max as the President of FIA...

  16. Rich: All of them are essentially one corporation. Should they wish, they could set up their own championship series, 24 cars, 3 per brand and have the development teams from each compete against each other. But that is only theoretical and very unlikely.

While any of VAG's makes would be good for F1, would you commit $100m per year minimum to a sport controlled by Max and Bernie?

  18. ginger,
Don't get me wrong, I still love F1, but becoming more and more disenchanted with the way things are going, and more and more bored with the Ferrari/Mclaren domination. Two years ago when there was some noise about a competing series, I sort of laughed. Not now! If a series could fill a grid with some of the marques you mentioned, I would become a steadfast fan (and regretfully drop F1).

  20. A spec. engine? That's not going to work, can you say IRL? Why doesn't he just take the F out and put a S and then you will have Specification 1. Great drivers but no great battles between factories. This in would dull the sport and money will dry up because lack of innovation. This may spark a breakaway series with the manufactures who didn't win the competition to be the engine supplier. Then there is a question who will supply the engines? If its Ferrari they should get rid of the A1GP. The spec engine computers I never liked, there may be some programmable functions but still there's a lack if innovation. If this happens next will be the trans. then the body and how about this a spec driver. Just clone Michael Schumacher andn you would get the worlds best racing, no just super boring.
