FIA president Max Mosley has said he wants all Formula One teams to use the same engine to cut spiralling costs.
Such a move would dramatically alter the traditional landscape of a sport that has long depended upon technological competition between teams as one of its prime areas of interest.
However Mosley believes that a common engine is a practical prospect and may even be welcomed by the squads as spending becomes "irrational".
"I know that the big constructors will say to me that 'if there is to be a single engine, I want it to be mine', but in the real world, if a racing company can buy a cheaper engine then it will do so - without doubt," he told L'Equipe.
He added that he was in favour of standard suspensions and gearboxes.
There have been past calls for a more level playing field as heavily-backed outfits such as McLaren-Mercedes and Ferrari have dominated recently, while in the ongoing campaign Super Aguri became the latest team to fold due to massive running costs.
Renault won the two World Championship titles prior to last season with Spaniard Fernando Alonso.
Despite his stance over engines, Mosley does not agree with the French team's boss Flavio Briatore that there ought to be a single KERS device in use when the kinetic energy-recovering rules come into force in 2009.
"This shows the inability of team owners to think logically," he said. "Only when the KERS system has been extensively tested can we think about a common usage."
A1GP, a competitor to F1, uses a standard engine, while motorsport's premier class has worked to downgrade the spending on feeder series GP2 from next year to 250,000 euros per car from 1.5m euros.
The renamed championship will be known as F2.

Agreed that this is stupid.
Mosley has totally the wrong idea just like his father did too.Perhaps they want to make F1 into formula ferrari.
What F1 needs is more excitement and less rules. The Belgian GP showed how great the sport can be with different cars behaving differently in changing conditions. We need more circuits that have overtaking if i want to see a procession I can go to the carnival in Rio. Bring back real racing!!!
sdcharger: Audi's input into F1 (or a competing series) could be huge. Audi are part of VAG (Volkswagen Audi Group). That includes the following:
1: Audi (Proven rally team of yesteryear and dominant Le Mans team)
2: Volkswagen (A dominant participant in the Paris-Dakar Rally)
3: Porshce (Runners of some of the worlds most prestigious racing tournaments, including the North American Rolex Cup)
4: Lamborghini (Who were an F1 engine supplier many a year ago)
5: Bugatti (One of the world's richest racing heritages at one point)
6: Bentley (Compete reguarly in Le Mans championships)
7: Seat (Compete in the DTM, WTCC and BTCC with their saloon cars)
8: Skoda (No racing heritage, but my prefered brand to form up on the grid alongside Merceds, BMW and Ferrari)
That's potentially upto 8 individual teams, 7 of which who already have racing expertise. VAG could easily supply 2 or 3 teams on the gris if the incentive was there for them to do so.
Might as well get rid of the engines altogether. Just tie a couple of horses to the car and let's have Formula One, Roman style!
The only noxious emissions, besides Mosley's emanations, would be the @#$% generated by all that horsepower. Better get the shovels ready!
ginger,
Unfortunatly, I think your quite right about a competing series. Thing can't keep going the way they are going, much less the way Max and Bernie want them to go in the future. Not only would you see names like Audi and Nissan, but I heard Volkswagon/Porshe would be interested as well as defections of the current F1 line-up. Maybe we could even see Cosworth again or even a new Lotus squad.
i would love to see Mazdas rotary in F1.
ohh wait they will ban it as soon as it wins
darn it
F1 is all about The Best Cars, The Best Engines, The Best Suspension, The Best Teams, And no longer the Best Tyres, So if you remove the Engines and Suspension from the equation what are you left with? Well not the Best Cars, This would be the final nail in the coffin for F1...
Max go back to your prostitutes and shut up...
F1 is interesting only coz have diff. engins..-u idiot Max! better make rules easier to read-maybe then complains will stop- less layers, less problem!
Ah, the "Aryan" theory of engine regulation- what a suprise.....
why is a demented pervert still helping run---F 1

I hear alot of complaining about the suggestion but no one else is coming up with any one ideas.
You people are weak!
yes he should be happier settled in the old folkes home --{under lock s + armed guards }
Perhaps Moseley really wants the suggested FIA/Ferrari connection to be made public? Turn the FIA's Formula 1 World Championship into the FIA's Ferrari World Championship. 20 Ferrari cars on the grid, a guaranteed red win.
I think Mosley wants to remembered throughout history as the man (or Nazi) who destroyed F!
The old geyser is a @#$%!
