Mosley wants standard engines

Eurosport - Fri, 19 Sep 10:29:00 2008

FIA president Max Mosley has said he wants all Formula One teams to use the same engine to cut spiralling costs.

Such a move would dramatically alter the traditional landscape of a sport that has long depended upon technological competition between teams as one of its prime areas of interest.

However Mosley believes that a common engine is a practical prospect and may even be welcomed by the squads as spending becomes "irrational".

"I know that the big constructors will say to me that 'if there is to be a single engine, I want it to be mine', but in the real world, if a racing company can buy a cheaper engine then it will do so - without doubt," he told L'Equipe.

He added that he was in favour of standard suspensions and gearboxes.

There have been past calls for a more level playing field as heavily-backed outfits such as McLaren-Mercedes and Ferrari have dominated recently, while in the ongoing campaign Super Aguri became the latest team to fold due to massive running costs.

Renault won the two World Championship titles prior to last season with Spaniard Fernando Alonso.

Despite his stance over engines, Mosley does not agree with the French team's boss Flavio Briatore that there ought to be a single KERS device in use when the kinetic energy-recovering rules come into force in 2009.

"This shows the inability of team owners to think logically," he said. "Only when the KERS system has been extensively tested can we think about a common usage."

A1GP, a competitor to F1, uses a standard engine, while motorsport's premier class has worked to downgrade the spending on feeder series GP2 from next year to 250,000 euros per car from 1.5m euros.

The renamed championship will be known as F2.

  2. SACK HIM,
if one engine is cheap, why did you need 5 girls for your pleasure, when one was cheaper, go play with yourself, and let F1 be run by men

We already have that formula its called A1, when will the FIA vote to boot out a man who is a discredit to Ferrari 1 sorry Formula 1 take a look at Moto GP different bikes different engines CC limit it then comes down to Technical development of chassis and set up for race day then they stick on a rider and off they go exciting eh. F1 is exciting at the moment no one is streets ahead in both championships.
But I would nigh on put my mortgage on a Spying scandal or poor stewardship denying McLaren and F1 of its first BLACK BRITISH world champ.
Any one know their history research the name Mosley for the answer

  5. Massa nearly takes out a car in the pit lane.stewards "it's ok" Lewis outdrives Kimi (who doesn't like damp tracks) BIG PROBLEM. Ferrari go crying to stewards (big cheque book in hand probably) Result goes Ferraris way............how cute. want to see racing by an Italian, to see how it should be done, watch Valentino Rossi, in his words "that's racing" rules rules rules

  6. F1 fans really don't need to worry if Moseley gets his way because the engine makers who don't get the nod will surely just set up a competing series independent of both Max and Bernie. It will keep most of the F1 values, take the vast majority of fans with it and will hopefully attract a few more names (like Audi or Nissan). This won't kill the sport we love, it will just provide the push to create a new one to follow.
