Mosley wants standard engines

Eurosport - Fri, 19 Sep 10:29:00 2008

FIA president Max Mosley has said he wants all Formula One teams to use the same engine to cut spiralling costs.

2008 Monaco GP Mosley - 0

Such a move would dramatically alter the traditional landscape of a sport that has long depended upon technological competition between teams as one of its prime areas of interest.

However Mosley believes that a common engine is a practical prospect and may even be welcomed by the squads as spending becomes "irrational".

"I know that the big constructors will say to me that 'if there is to be a single engine, I want it to be mine', but in the real world, if a racing company can buy a cheaper engine then it will do so - without doubt," he told L'Equipe.

He added that he was in favour of standard suspensions and gearboxes.

There have been past calls for a more level playing field as heavily-backed outfits such as McLaren-Mercedes and Ferrari have dominated recently, while in the ongoing campaign Super Aguri became the latest team to fold due to massive running costs.

Renault won the two World Championship titles prior to last season with Spaniard Fernando Alonso.

Despite his stance over engines, Mosley does not agree with the French team's boss Flavio Briatore that there ought to be a single KERS device in use when the kinetic energy-recovering rules come into force in 2009.

"This shows the inability of team owners to think logically," he said. "Only when the KERS system has been extensively tested can we think about a common usage."

A1GP, a competitor to F1, uses a standard engine, while motorsport's premier class has worked to downgrade the spending on feeder series GP2 from next year to 250,000 euros per car from 1.5m euros.

The renamed championship will be known as F2.

  4. I honestly can't wait for the day when formula one sees the back Max Mosley.
The sooner he finds the door the better.

I think you can get away with every team using a sole tyre manufacturer, but to have the same apply for engines wouldn't be good for F1.
It wouldn't be as interesting. Let's not forget that F1 is in fact a team sport and to have a sole engine supplier would tame the competition amongst the teams.

  6. The biggest expence in formula one is the people that try to run it, and Mosely is one of the biggest. Lets do it right and race Peugot 308s then it can be no worse than it is at the moment. Once these people get in on it, and it all revolves around money, they take the interest out of it. It is no longer a race, just a procession, and who's pit stop crew can turn who around faster. F1 is like watching paint dry.

  7. How can such a highpowered Multi Billion Dollar sport have total @#$%theads like Moseley & Ecclestone at its head. UN-phucking-Beleivable.
For the record Max (how I wish he would read this) We already have several Motor-racing Series which does what you are suggesting. A1GP, FPA,World Series By RenaulT, Formula Nissan, Formula BMW , IRL (does that count) the list is endless. So numbnuts if you make F1 the same as all the other Formulas why should sponsors bit bucks to sponsor F1 when they could get a cheaper option. why would tv companies pay etc etc. The guy is talk out of his Arrse and that just been smacked. If max wanted everything to be the same y didn't he have on @#$% dressed in 5 different Uniforms and save himeself a packet.
The worst thing about all of this is that the dirty old @#$% will stand for re-elections next year cos he thinks he's bullet proof. you heard it here first folks!

All rally Drivers in the WRC should drive only Model T Fords
ETC ETC ETC. You get the picture.

I am NOT so optimistic that there is a lot of overtaking in the Singapore circuit. I have been driving around the area and I can't really see potential overtaking opportunity after watching the processional race of Valencia.

However, I think there is a 50% chance of wet race since we get a lot of rain here lately. This may add to the excitement of racing. In the wet, it really create overtaking opportunity. If you want excitement, pray for rain in Singapore during the raceday.

  13. Hey Max... if u want F1 enginering to be relevant again, AND less costly, drop the tiny v-8's. I can think of no other vehicle in the world that has a 2.4 litre v8 that revs to 19k!! Make them run 2.4 litre, turbo charged, 4 cylinder engines. That will cut the revs way down. Cut costs at least a little, if not a lot. Most importantly, it will give the manufacturers a place to learn some practical lessons that could be translated directly back to road cars. It might even lure a few more constructors into F1.

Look at whappened to the quality of Bridgestone and Michelene tires in the one season they had to qualify and run the whole race on one set of tires. Their respective off the shelf super tires made such leaps in quality and ability that Goodyear and other manufacturars had to improve their offerings to keep up. Making the whole catagory better for us consumers. I bet the same thing will happen just as fast if u change the engines to a more real world configuration.

  15. might as well use the Toyota Prius or the Honda FXX Hybrid engine, save cost, enviromental friendly and cheap. But we might see a Spa race that last between 3-4 hours and with the only excitement is to see which driver fell asleep at wheel doing less than 60mph over Eau Rouge.
