Vettel fastest for Red Bull in Jerez; Sato tests

Eurosport - Fri, 19 Sep 12:20:00 2008

Italian Grand Prix winner Sebastian Vettel was the fastest at Jerez on day three of testing with Red Bull Racing, his team for 2009.

Nick Heidfeld (BMW) and Lucas di Grassi (Renault) were next fastest.

In the rain-interrupted session, Vettel's current team Toro Rosso tried out former Super Aguri driver Takuma Sato in the German's absence.

Sato was one of three Japanese in action at the Jerez circuit in southern Spain with Kamui Kobayashi testing for Toyota and regular race driver Kazuki Nakajima in a Williams.

"The team was pleased with the work he did, clearly demonstrating his previous experience in a grand prix car," Toro Rosso said in a statement after Sato lapped sixth fastest of the eight drivers.

The Ferrari-powered team won last weekend in Italy with Vettel becoming F1's youngest winner at the age of 21.

Italy-based Toro Rosso are looking for a replacement for the German, who is joining Red Bull at the end of the season when David Coulthard retires.

"At the start of the day we were collecting aero data," said Sato, who was hoping to press his claims for a race drive in 2009. "Then by the end of the morning we began timed runs, so I could really feel the car and I started to enjoy the laps.

"Unfortunately, in the afternoon it started to rain so we had to stop. That was a great shame as I was looking forward to proper running in the afternoon."

Unofficial Thursday times from Jerez:

1. Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull, 1:18.001

2. Nick Heidfeld, BMW Sauber, 1:18.167

3. Lucas di Grassi, Renault, 1:18.999

4. Pedro de la Rosa, McLaren, 1:19.281

5. Alexander Wurz, Honda, 1:19.499

6. Takuma Sato, Toro Rosso, 1:19.574

7. Kamui Kobayashi, Toyota, 1:19.863

8. Kazuki Nakajima, Williams, 1:21.892

  3. Hey jbolan. I believe somebody suspected that you and carposhea were the same person elsewhere on the site. From what you suggest everybody who is posting at the same time must be the same person - What a genius you are - Or am I talking to myself? just looked back over some earlier topics and there is a common trend to your posts and carposhas - Both are inane and pathetically disguised - You sad little man.

  8. Ginger's right about the the slicks and KERS -No teams have unveiled their 2009 chassis yet. I'm sure there will also be some engine developments in the pipeline - Renault could certainly do with a bit more grunt if there is any truth in what we hear.

Agree with Sparrow re Ginger's posts - I find I am now skipping the moronic posters completly (have a mental list) as they have nothing interesting to say. Lets ignore these cretins - They feed off any reaction to their jibes.

  10. Nope Ginger - No sarcasm.

Think you're right about 2009 testing being confined to slick tyres and KERS thing - Might have had a few pints when I tuned into that one.

  13. jbolan, I am getting a bit bored of you now, you never say anything productive, funny or intelectual, so what is the point in you. All you come up with is insults of the lowest class (i.e. not even mildly offending or humerous) and cannot say anything constructive about f1, just go away.

  14. Mr T says. jbolan your crazier than Murdock. Dont let me catch you acting like a crazy fool again or there is gonna be trouble, with a capital Mr T!

  15. Be kind Mr. T, Sato can fire his car up with no problem....getting out of pit lane could be deadly though!

  16. Forza: I have to agree that it would be a "killer" combination. It doesn't matter who sits in the second Mclaren seat, Ferrari Constructors Championships would be difficult to stop. The same could be said for Mclaren though if one of them ends up alongside Lewis. That's why it'd be a shame for F1 and the competition. But there's no doubt it'd be exciting watching them fight each other (if indeed they are allowed to genuinely fight each other)

    From ginger_gitt, on Thu 18 Sep 8:37PM
  17. tifsoi,
Schumi as team principal at Ferrari...very interesting (and possible). Brawn returning, not likely but still interesting, but Alonso in the seat...not a chance. Schumi's feelings toward teamwork is well known (which is one reason he and Massa are such good friends), and, as terrific a driver Alonso is, the word "team" is apparently not in the Spanish dictionary.

From Rich L, on Thu 18 Sep 8:35PM
  18. Agree with Mr T. Sato is a crazy fool and a danger to other drivers, you gotta feel sorry for the likes of Seb and Nick, they would not have felt safe, wondering when they were going to get a toro rosso flying into the back of them!

    From tifosi4eva, on Thu 18 Sep 8:31PM
  19. Mr T says. Takuma Sato is a crazy fool! Mr T thinks he shouldnt be allowed anywhere near an F1 car. Mr T thinks That sucka could kill half the grid Just firing his engine up!

From MR T, on Thu 18 Sep 8:25PM
  20. I am loving that dream team forza, I could only improve it if Fernando was in it, he is a very talented driver no doubt. Nothing would be better than Schumacher being Ferrari's team boss with Ross Brawn returning to the scene, that would then be pure bliss.
