Nothing less than a one-two finish will help Citroen Racing boss Olivier Quesnel recover from the penalties his team received hours after the World Rally Championship's Australian round.
Sebastien Loeb won the rally but found himself demoted to second place when a stewards' report showed that his Citroen C4 WRC carried non-homologated anti-roll bar links. Dani Sordo and Sebastien Ogier received one-minute penalties as well, but for Loeb it meant the difference between a one-point and five-point deficit to series leader Mikko Hirvonen, who inherited the win.
Citroen recognised that an error had been made and accepted the penalties applied to its three drivers, although the team blamed a low-quality picture appearing in the homologation manual as the source of the costly error.
"We are still in shock," Quesnel told Eurosport. "An administrative error was sanctioned by a sporting penalty and I do not understand it. But such is motorsport.
"It had no influence on performance. We are surprised by the harshness of the penalty," he stated.
Quesnel believes that the best thing to do regarding the incident is to put it all behind and concentrate on the upcoming rallies in Spain and Great Britain, which will close the 2009 season.
"Now we must show that we are the strongest by taking a one-two on the next round in Spain," he said. "The best reply to deliver is on the road."
