Ashes - Warne: Wrong team won Ashes

Eurosport - Sat, 19 Sep 21:21:00 2009

Australia's domination of England in the one-day series is providing some small consolation for their defeat in the Tests but shows the wrong team won the Ashes, former spin bowler Shane Warne said.

The Australians have rebounded spectacularly from their 2-1 Ashes defeat by winning the first five of their seven one-day matches against the English.

"It's great to see them (Australia) playing well," Warne said. "They (England) have a pretty poor side and Australia are starting to hit their straps.

"They were hurting after the Ashes - it's good to see them bounce back and play well."

Warne said the one-day results added weight to his argument that the Australians were the better side in the Ashes and should not have lost the series.

"You don't mind being beaten in any sport if a side outplays you on the day or over a series, then so be it," he said.

"I suppose the hardest thing for all us Australians was to watch them play and lose to England, who I didn't think was a better side.

"You look at all the numbers, the runs and wickets, we dominated all that sort of stuff, but through a few different things here and there... it probably cost us."

Warne was part of the Australian side that thumped England 5-0 at home in 2006-07, helping regain the Ashes and avenge a 2-1 loss away in 2005.

Warne was among a handful of senior players who retired during or after that series, triggering the present rebuilding of the national side, but predicted the Australians would again regain the Ashes when the series returns to Australia in 2010-11.

"I don't think England were a better side than us, no way, but you have to say 'well played' to England because they won," he said.

"I'm looking forward to them coming out here in 18 months."

Ungalund should stick to playing croquet.! They are pants at Cricket. ! Why ? They only just got the ashes this year by a combination of sheer luck due to the weather and unfair play .Look at what happened in the first test - the Aussies were miles ahead when the weather and unfair play by Ungalund ( by deliberately slowing the game down ) meant they scraped the bottom of the barrel to eek out a draw.Where's the skill in that.?The Aussies have just shown them who's boss .6 - 1 in the OD ers.

  5. Ben for the Sydney test do you remember how many decisions went against us??? I'm sorry to see that ur so ignorant about that fact! Please just google and ull get ur answers...we would never have been in that position in those last 5 overs if your sooo honest (joking) Ponting and ur equally honest 'walker' Gilly had not claimed catches that were never there.....and there is also news abt Channel Nine uncovering some ball tampering but since u guys r sponsored by CA they conveniently edited that segment where Clarke and Hayden were clearly caught picking the seam!! (I was in Sydney at that time and I had caught this on TV).....such a disgrace! Anyways if you still claim that Aussies won fairly that test??? then ill not argue anymore....i live in Australia and yet im honest enough to admit that to any Aussie that u guys werent fair winners....there is no shame in living with dignity...cheers!

  6. rushad as i said to phillip where did i mention spelling and grammar in my post if your gonna have a go at me at least quote what i said,i said educated and if you were you wouldnt resort to calling people brainless cause they dont agree with you, as for the sydney test fiasco with about 5 overs left to play on the last day india lost 3 wickets in 9 balls so the only fiasco was their batting and did they not threaten to go home if the umpires were not changed for the rest of the series ? good sportsmen aye? and as for gk read the post i said beat a good team away ,for the record i am not aus or english but have lived in both countries and have found bad sportsmen in every country ive lived in but i have have met lots more good sportsmen in these countries and by the way i am fluent in 3 languages so what and phillip ill save you a post cause i know the grammar is wrong
now back to the topic eng deserved to win the ashes cause they won more tests good luck to them i think england (strauss apart) are an average batting team and aus are an average bowling team so it was always gonna be a close affair,as for warnie i wouldnt take him too serious, hes like mcgrath every series aus is gonna win 5-0 or 7-0 or 3-0 they just like to wind people up and it appears to work

  8. As an Aussie I wish Warnie would stop being a bad sport over this one and I wish you whinging childen would cut it out.. The poms beat us fair and square in the tests. If we were the" better" team but lost, then the poms deserve their victroy even more.
    Congratulations England.

  9. 10. Warne its amazing your still a TW ATwhen will you learn we don,t care about that mickey mouse game they are playing at the moment we just like to pummel you in Cricket Test Matches so trot off back to oz and fiddle with a Koala.

  11. Ben (50) in answer to your query, here is a section of your quote,..."who left there to be educated (which you havent achieved)". As you don't know Rashid personally, your comment can only mean his English is bad.

From Philip B, on Thu 17 Sep 6:52PM
  12. phillip b (48) where do i mention spelling or grammar perhaps you should read the post again

From Ben, on Thu 17 Sep 6:44PM
  13. Warne did not say "The wrong team won", but he did say "The better team lost". A perfectly acceptable headline therefore, would have been "The worse team won" as it contains the opposites of his quote; but as you can see, "The worse team won" doesn't look so good to a journalist, and it would have indicated that England are the worse team in the world.

  14. Ben (46) Thanks for the good laugh pal,...you have the nerve to comment on another's bad spelling and grammar,....and allow us to read your paragraph containing at least 24 spelling, punctuation, and capitalisation errors,...and it was YOU who quoted the phrase "Talk about the pot calling the kettle black." ROTFLMFA!

From Philip B, on Thu 17 Sep 6:36PM
  15. Rushad, thanks for correcting me,...I had England on the brain at the time,...and I also said "six to win" when in fact it was six to tie.

From Philip B, on Thu 17 Sep 6:28PM
  16. rushad your obviously an indian who left there to be educated (which you havent achieved) or get abetter life,at least in oz they dont have to have the crowds in cages like at indian cricket matches, and as for india walloping aus ,your the same as the english in the fact that you can only win at home, when was the last time india won a test series away from the sub continent against a good team ie safrca ,aus. As foe the symonds issue you only had to see the banners at the test series in india to see who the racists were, wouldnt be allowed in any civilised country, and as for warnie hes a legend doesnt mean hes right but he has a better knowledge of the game than anyone posting here, and lastly as for sore losers go back and read the posts put up after the 4th test by english supporters pot and kettle come to mind

From Ben, on Thu 17 Sep 5:56PM
  17. About the only point of truth in Warne's blog is the last sentence "I'm looking forward to them coming out here in 18 months." ...... a fact which brings about an unfair advantage to Australia, because as the home team generally 'regains' the Ashes, Australia get to hold them for 30 months, and England only 18.

From Philip B, on Thu 17 Sep 5:50PM
  18. wasting my breath perhaps. but shane warne NEVER SAID THE WRONG TEAM WON! eurosport said that. but i suppose he did say australia is a 'better team,' which would mean england won as the underdog. he also said 'well played' to england for punching above their weight (in his opinion).

but how does shane warne saying australia is a better side have anything to do with australia being 'racist'? if you want to bag australian society in general there are other chat forums you could participate in.

From Cos, on Thu 17 Sep 5:00PM
  19. Oh dear here we go again
yes we may have not been the best team that ever won the Ashes but let us face it, an Aussie team that could not bowl out Monty Panesar should not be too pleased with themselves.

  20. Philip i beg to correct u on that one mate....that was against NZ and it was by Trevor Chappell (Greg and I'm-always-right Ian Chappell's bro).....and does anyone remember the kick to Javed Miandad by Dennis Lillee??? Does anyone remember the constant chucking accusation on Muralitharan....does anyone remember that Oval Test fiasco by Darrell Hair?? Another Aussie racist....does anyone remember how in the old days not anyone would give a decision against Australia when a visiting team would appeal??? The list goes on....most unprofessional and definitely unethical supporters....see Andrew!! Instead of addressing the problem and improving the Aussie image abroad (I try and do that with my multicultural mates) sometimes......ur instead slagging me off???? Shows what a tinpot sided brain u guys have.....they say too much alcohol causes brain damage....in ur case...u have no brain eft for damage...back to VB then is it Andrew??? Or maybe Fosters?? Ill ask Shane Warne to join us....he is good at beer and the master at women....some tips maybe for us??
