Davis Cup - Federer doubles Swiss advantage

Eurosport - Sun, 20 Sep 00:01:00 2009

World number one Roger Federer cruised to a 6-3 6-4 6-1 win over Simone Bolelli to help Switzerland take a 2-0 lead in their Davis Cup World Group play-off against Italy in Genoa.

Federer said he felt tired before the match after flying back to Europe following his five-set defeat by Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro in Monday's US Open final but it rarely showed.

He surrendered a break advantage in the fourth game of the second set with a couple of poor forehands but he regained it in the next game and went on to wrap up the match with ease.

Earlier his team-mate Stanislas Wawrinka pulled off a 6-4 6-1 6-2 win over Andreas Seppi, who took a break at the start of the third set because of stomach cramps.

"I was surprised to see how easy me and Wawrinka won," Federer told Rai. "Maybe Bolelli and Seppi put too much pressure on themselves. Now we just need one more point."

Federer is down to join forces with Wawrinka on Saturday for the doubles match against Fabio Fognini and Potito Starace before the return singles rubbers on Sunday.

If Switzerland win the play-off they will retain their place in the World Group but if Italy stage a comeback they will replace the Swiss in the top tier of the competition.

  1. This is what's wrong with the Davis cup and why it means absolutely nothing to most tennis fans.
GB was playing Poland ?Switzerland was playing Italy ?Cyprus was playing Finland ? So what ? the two semis were being played at the same time, and we now have the two Finalists,Spain and Czech. Then what of Poland ,What of Switzerland and everyone else? Playing for 5th,6th or 10th place ? Playing to progress in the next year's Davis cup ? Don't give me answers, just tell me how many of you truly know without researching it,and how many of you truly care.
To save the Davis Cup from oblivion, and make sense in an already overbooked calendar for most players,i suggest the Davis Cup is to be played every 4 years, like a world cup and maybe, just maybe, people will show up to support their team, not like the croats for example, which is just one of many examples just like it.

The only thing you can do now is cry over your 'very' injured Nadal (and Murray). Keep reminscing of those good moments of glory cause it's gone. Nadal is a GREAT player but 2008 will not repeat itself.

Roger is the best player ever. Like justlovethisgame said...BEST THERE IS, BEST THERE WAS and the BEST THERE EVER WILL BE. Long live King Roger.

  9. Before the China Olympics, Federer used to skip a lot of Davis cup games due to ''fatigue''. Since he went through rrough patches with his carrier, dropping to number 2 and loosing most of his Grand Slam titles, Federer used the Swiss national team to recover some joy and he won the double gold medal with them. That helped him recover his hunger and regain his confidence and he is repaying the national team by playing for them despite his ''fatigue''. The best Tennis player in the world is also a man of honour and ethics.A true role model.
