Davis Cup - Murray injured with scores level

Eurosport - Sat, 19 Sep 18:48:00 2009

Andy Murray is a doubt for Davis Cup doubles action after Great Britain and Poland split the opening two rubbers in the Europe/Africa Zone Group 1 relegation play-off in Liverpool.

Murray beat Michal Przysiezny 6-4 6-2 6-4 in the opener to give Great Britain the early advantage but then Daniel Evans lost to Jerzy Janowicz 6-3 6-3 7-6 (5) in his Davis Cup debut.

The doubles rubber now looks to be critical - and if fit Murray should team up with Ross Hutchins to take on the dangerous Polish pair of Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski who are ranked 11th in the world and have eight doubles titles to their name.

However the world number three aggravated a sore wrist picked up at the recent US Open in his singles rubber and so he may miss out.

"I don't want to... end up hurting myself so badly I can't play for a few months," he told the BBC.

"Every time I play on it, it's making it worse."

Murray was always likely to beat a player ranked number 687 in the world but he will be glad to have polished off the match in straight sets with a busy weekend now in store.

The world number three managed to break Przysiezny in the third game of each set which proved crucial to his victory, although he did not always have it all his own way against the Pole, who while limited, certainly played better than his lowly ranking suggests.

Murray was conservative and sluggish in the opening set and needed to save three break points before finally serving out the first set.

He was much better in the second set though, as his potent backhand down the line started to find its range, and a four-game streak in the middle of the set allowed him to race to a two-set advantage.

Przysiezny made life a little more difficult in the final set and had a break point again at 4-3 down, but Murray held before winning his final service game to love.

Evans had a disappointing debut against Janowicz as he deservedly lost in straight sets.

The Birmingham teenager might only be 19 but that still made him a year older than his opponent. However it was the Pole who showed the cooler head under pressure in the big points and his icy exterior contrasted markedly to the animated Evans who went through a couple of petulant spells in the match that cost him dear.

Evans was broken three times in the first set and then paid for a poor period in the second set when he lost three games in a row without scoring a point.

The young Briton did play better in the final set, as he got a bit more tactically astute, but lost 7-5 in a tie-break, with Janowicz's big serve and forehand proving too much on the key points.

If fit Murray will be expected to beat Janowicz during Sunday's singles. British captain John Llyod will pray that the Scot can at least play in that - otherwise the unproven Evans will be required to win his reverse singles match with Przysiezny on Sunday.

I think ANDY MURRAY should be forced to have a GENDER TEST as I believe if he is found with FEMALE PARTS then he should be a contender for all WOMEN'S TITLES, I have always thought that ANDY has nothing between his EARS and possibly nothing between his LEGS aswell(female), this would also be the only way Britain can win Grand Slams. What's your opinion GIRLS?

  5. I agree. why isnt jamie playing? i know he was dropped earlier this year due to poor form but cmon, he could do better than hutchins..no offense but Jamie is a grand slam champion. but instead he was in belarus or something. its ridiculous. hutchins is pants at the net..something you cant be playing doubles. Bring Jamie back for the next DC tie regardless of whether we win this tie or not.

Just watching Andy Murray and Hutchinson play their first match against Poland in the Davis cup - If that is how the Scots behave themselves God help us because the behaviour of the supporters is appalling and the arrogance of Murray in winning the first game was also the same. Thank God Scotland have never featured highly in any sport - APPALLING !!

  8. why on earth isn;t jamie murrary playing - isn't he available or something? Andy gave of his best - it is a b pity he is prone to sprains etc: Come on Gt. Britain it is about time we had more strings to our bow than one man.??????

  9. Asked whether he came close to missing the tie, he said: "I thought about it but last time something like that happened I spent the next three months answering questions like, 'Are you dedicated enough to play for your country? Does Davis Cup mean anything to you? Is it important enough? Do you feel like you let your country down?'

"It's pathetic. I play hard and I've always enjoyed playing for my country. I came up here on Sunday with the rest of guys, I practised hard.

"I love being around a team atmosphere and every time I feel fit enough to play Davis Cup, I'll play. If I'm not feeling well or I'm hurt, then I can't."

stuartxland, your curse is as efficient as Murray's Grand Slam strategy. How about trying a plastic bag on your head? you would die quickly without too much pain

  12. Andy should never have been playing here in the first place when he knew he had injured his wrist in the US Open. He obviously didn't want to let the team down when they rely on him. Pity, i hope he's sensible now.

  14. So other players in all sports can have injuries but not Andy Murray??????????????
Andy must not play if he is aggravating an injury as he cannot afford to create a long term injury.

Dan Evans must up his game and use his brain in his next match so that he has a chance of winning, but as ever we cannot rely on one man to win a tie for us
