Former England captain Bryan Robson has "agreed in principal" to become coach of Thailand's national team and will fly out to agree terms next week.
If the deal goes through, the former Manchester United midfielder will be tasked with steering the team to the 2014 World Cup finals, Thai FA president Worawi Makudi said.
"Robson is interested and has agreed in principal to become our coach," Worawi told Reuters.
"He wants to come and discuss the details in person. He's a big name and we think he could play a big part in improving Thai football."
Robson, 52, would replace fellow former England international Peter Reid, who parted company with the Thais on September 9 after less than a year in charge.
Reid's lucrative contract, reported to have been worth around £1 million a year and part-funded by the English FA, was terminated by mutual consent.
The FAT rejected his request to coach the Thai side while serving as assistant manager at Premier League Stoke City.
Robson has managed Middlesbrough, Bradford, West Brom and most recently, Sheffield United, whom he quit in February 2008.

almost forgot" gary glitter lives out there..that's the rumour..
3 things will be going down::robson,the team, the birds..
Rubbish manager,i feel sorry for Thailand.
was a brilliant player one of the best give him a chance
he is ONLY there for the booze and the young girls
might not last 6 months
NOT like any UK clubs thought he was good enough in recent years
i guess Reidy told him leave ya wife and kids in UK and enjoy the sex
He's only going for the women, i bet Reidy told him its a sex haven, wonder if his wife and kids will live there with him ???
NOT like many clubs in UK wanted him as a manager
Robson is a joke, living off his past ! but still getting big money for his "name".
i dont get why people diss robson... he took middlesbrough to 3 finals in a year... how many other managers outside the top 4 can say theyve achieved that? in one year or 10 years? NONE. He got middlesbrough on the map and consolidated top flight football.
hello
I live in Thailand and come from Middlesbrough. Robson will be gone in less than 6 months. He could not cut it wherever he has managed and if he is looking for a soft touch here, forget it.
Robson probably thinks that Thailand is where Noddy lives...
Be interesting to see just how far Robson can get the Thai national team to fall down the rankings!
As good a player Robson WAS, he always has been and always will be a raubbish manager!
I give him 6 months tops in his new role......
