A brace from David Nugent helped Burnley to a 3-1 Premier League win over Sunderland at Turf Moor.
Nugent, who was considered a failure after only scoring three goals in two years following a £6 million move from Preston to Portsmouth, came on as a 57th-minute substitute and struck twice to continue Burnley's remarkable 100 per cent home record this season.
He put the hosts ahead with a powerful header 10 minutes after coming on and sealed the win with a superb turn and shot that nestled into the top left corner of Craig Gordon's goal.
The defeat will come as a blow to Sunderland, who earlier had gone behind against the run of play when Graham Alexander tucked home a 13th-minute penalty.
Darren Bent levelled with his fifth goal of the season but Nugent's late show put Burnley in the top half of the table, although behind Sunderland on goal difference.
Sunderland were by far the dominant force in the half's opening exchanges and Fraizer Campbell should have netted on five minutes after Steed Malbranque found him on the edge of the six-yard box but a heavy touch allowed Chris McCann to slide in and clear.
Otherwise they barely made any inroads into the home penalty area despite bossing possession, and it was the hosts who took the lead against the run of play when Anton Ferdinand needlessly clattered into Wade Elliott when the Burnley midfielder raced on to an Alexander through ball.
Alexander, 37, stepped up and became the seventh-oldest goalscorer in Premier League history by placing the ball straight down the middle.
Burnley gained in confidence but a poor defensive header from Andre Bikey let Bent in, but the erstwhile England striker could only fire straight at Brian Jensen from 10 yards out.
They got their leveller six minutes before half-time, when Clarke Carlisle went to sleep as his team-mates stepped up to play the offside trap.
He was so far behind the line that even Bent did not see him and looked confused as he was allowed to tuck Andy Reid's through ball past Jensen with everyone waiting for a flag or whistle.
Bent had a chance to get his second of the day and sixth of the season but he fired over after another piece of unsure defending from Bikey.
Michael Turner was fortunate not to pick up a yellow card after a heavy challenge that put McCann out of the game but was cautioned after giving Elliott a clobbering.
The second half was a more even-handed affair and the Black Cats had a penalty appeal waved away soon after the restart, but Steven Fletcher's handling of a corner was inadvertent and referee Chris Foy waved play on.
Jensen made an excellent stop from Campbell after the move of the match saw Malbranque hook Reid's cross back to Campbell via a Bent step-over.
The teams exchanged chances before, in a 68th-minute counter-attack, substitute Chris Eagles combined with Tyrone Mears on the right before Elliott swung a wicked cross that sub Nugent power-headed into the roof of the net.
Burnley's work-rate was typified when Eagles made a vital intervention by poking the ball away from George McCartney when Lorik Cana freed him on the left and, as the match drew to a close, Sunderland ran out of ideas and legs.
Nugent sealed the win on 85 minutes with a wonderful piece of skill to turn two defenders and rifle a rising drive past Gordon with his weaker left foot, but Sunderland sub Kenwyne Jones must take responsibility for the goal after needlessly giving the ball away deep in the opposition half to start Elliott's counter.
Owen Coyle's men closed ranks and held on for a vital win in their battle to stay in the top flight.

I don't think the utter slime-ball that is Ming Wrong is a Mackem or man of Durham fella, have you seen the main SBR thread and the comment 17 and the vile human degenerates posts. We should all complain to the lazy .f.c.u.k.w.i.t. mods at Yahoo, so they can be banned immediately.

"Again this is my right to be critical of your team and my right to state what I think. No doubt you will respond with some kind of abusive remark that you think is profoundly intelligent but merely serves to expose you as the arrogant fascist cider swilling moron that you are. If you dont like my posts doughnut dont respond to them"
The paragraph in quotation marks is an attempt to sound as petty, smug and patronising as you. I say attempt as we all know it is impossible to achieve this feat.....
Cameron me mate, 190.Oh and pw wilson -
what a bold, bold, bold prediction . . . . . .'Bruce will outlast Houghton as manager'!
I should blood y think so too; in case you forgot man, coach Houghton is only a CARETAKER manager!!
Talk about playing it safe!
I'm glad its drawn a response from somebody because J.C is suffering snow blind at the minute pal.
Anyway to prove it wasn't a fluke, I will predict our chairman and owner are also longer in their jobs than yours, now I cant be much fairer than that fella. Sadly though I would love to see(just love it) SNQ and ES after a glorious 10yr period or so being eclipsed by Ashley and the lamb, but I can dream can't I.

Hooray for Knobhead he's actually posted a football comment!!!!!!
That is ofcourse your opinion and what you think is important to you. But, not to me, yes we were beaten by Burnley, but not because "MAN for MAN" they were a better team, because, we didnt play anywhere near as good as we can and our Manager made mistakes in the team selection. ( and i am not turning on him(
Again this is my right to be critical to my team and my right to state what I think. No doubt you will respond with some kind of abusive remark that you think is funny.
ahhh gwasshopper...................................
