Loan star David Nugent made a dramatic start to his Burnley career with two late goals to sink Sunderland 3-1 and keep his side's proud 100% home record intact.
Deadline day signing Nugent rose to head home Wade Elliott's 67th-minute free-kick nine minutes after replacing Martin Paterson - then struck again in the 86th minute to seal the points.
Graham Alexander's 12th-minute penalty had put the home side in front before Andy Reid's cross set up Darren Bent to slot home the equaliser six minutes before half-time.
Alexander was served up the chance to fire home the 12th minute spot-kick after Anton Ferdinand was guilty of needlessly tripping the impressive Elliott in the box.
Burnley came close to adding a second in the 19th minute when Alexander caught the Black Cats defence sleeping at a set-piece and Martin Paterson almost stole in at the far post.
Andre Bikey's hesitation let in Bent to hook a shot straight at Burnley goalkeeper Brian Jensen in the 21st minute but the visitors were struggling to maintain their early momentum.
However, Bruce's men drew back on level terms in the 39th minute when Andy Reid played a superb delayed pass into the box which found Bent in space to slot the ball past Jensen.
Campbell almost put the visitors ahead in the 52nd minute when his low drive was blocked well at close range by Jensen after a neat lay-off by Steed Malbranque. But with clear chances at a premium both sides looked to their benches with Kenwyne Jones on for the visitors and Nugent given his chance to steal the show.
After Elliott had come close with a looping effort which just cleared Gordon's crossbar, the stage was handed over for Nugent to snatch another famous Clarets victory. Nugent marked his stunning home start in the 67th minute when he rose to meet a deep Elliott cross from the right and headed Burnley's second past Gordon.
And Nugent's second four minutes from time was even better as once again he was fed the ball by Elliott before turning inside the box and firing home a curling shot.

Well if Yvonne is correct and you do have a habit visiting gay clubs the golden rivet must always of been in your eye. Regarding your comments about championship we should be looking at the knacked cats for tips after the years of experience that they have had there. Judging by the way that everybody seems to have no trouble widing you up I can only say that you are a right muppet and totally illiterate.
BRIT/DIP, thats richardson not me! shows how much you know you sad man, tell ya wife to shut up and screw the mailman like she has been doing for the last 5 years, or get behind her son and try your best, whats with this navy thing? ive only mentioned it twice and it's a maybe, but most likely, you must be really sad to spot out errors in comments, deary deary me..............does your wife help you, or does she just bring the tea and biscuits?
ps: enjoy chamionship @#$%, but its's not like you go to matches you sad armchair supporter.
Hey sean just had a look at your photo with nice tight curls like that I bet the navy boys just loved showing you the golden rivet.
sean "i before e except after c". By the way sean wife says that we know that you served your time in the navy cleaning portholes but the next time that you clean ours will you make sure that you clean the corners. Also sean I keep asking you to leave a receipt, if you wish to rip off the Benefits Office and the Tax Man fine but we would like a receipt. Well done Yvonne for spotting Brucies deliberate mistake I hope that he manages to do the same next time. Real good talk he did after the North Run it sure shows that he is passionate about ending up managing a class team like NCL.
BRIT/DIP, wHo CARRES abboot spellling! oh wait...............you do you sad peice of flesh.
Steve Bruce did'nt pick the wrong team. he picked the right team to send them back to the championship. Don't forget, he is a true Geordie with the Toon at heart.
Sean A when are you ever going to learn to spell and learn at least the basics of the Queens English. I know because I was there, listening to prominent sports people from around the region, giving their views on what is happening here.
i watched the great north run??? your lieing out your arse mate
David Nugent played well and deserved the goals he scored. I was quite surprised at Bruce's comments at the end of the Great North Run when he stated that tempting approaches had been made by Moat asking him to manage the team that he has always prefered, NCL. I would think that after the disaster made by Shearer at the end of the last season Bruce would be a good contender for the position, after all he is used to managing the bigger teams instead of trying to put on a good face where he is now.
nugent didnt score from a wade elliot free kick, why does it say he did at the start, and then they go on to say it was from a cross.
get ya facts straight.
P.Wilson, if your out there. "This wasn't a win for Burnley, but a defeat fro Steve Bruce" quote from Paperboy
S Malbranque should not have made way for K Jones today, in my opinion it should have been Campbell going off for Jones to come on. The defence needs to be sorted and it neve will be with Ferdinand at the heart, drop him and get either Mesah or Da Silva in alongside Turner. get Fulop back to fitness and inbetween the posts. Well done Burnley good result and you deserved it.
This wasn't a win for Burnley, but a defeat fro Steve Bruce, who picked the wrong starting line-up and went on to make things worse as the game went on. Campbell starting in place of Jones - who was only brought onto the pitch with 5 minutes to play. Henderson on for Malbranque. Bruce is a good coach - far better than this result suggests - but he has to pick a team to win and IMO he picked this team to lose, and made the Clarets look much better than they are in the process.
