Hamilton snatches Shanghai pole

Eurosport - Sun, 19 Oct 09:29:00 2008

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton gave his Formula One title hopes a huge boost when he took pole position for the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai with his main rival Felipe Massa of Ferrari qualifying third.

2008 Chinese GP McLaren Hamilton - 0

The 23-year-old Briton - who would become the sport's youngest world champion if he wins Sunday's penultimate race of the season and Massa finishes fifth or worse - will line up alongside reigning champion Kimi Raikkonen on the front row.

BMW Sauber's Robert Kubica, the third driver still in the title race - albeit 12 points behind Hamilton - scraped into the second qualifying session but failed to reach the final shoot-out and will start 12th on the grid.

The Pole, who has been complaining about a lack of balance in his car all weekend, had a good morning practice with the third-best time behind team-mate Nick Heidfeld and Hamilton but his troubles returned when it mattered.

The first two rows of the grid will be exactly the same as last season in Shanghai with Renault's Fernando Alonso qualifying fourth.

Last year, Hamilton just needed to beat his championship rivals to win the title but failed to finish the race after skidding off at the pit-lane entry.

The front row in Shanghai will also be a repeat of last weekend's Japanese Grand Prix at Fuji, where Hamilton failed to score any points after a wild start that earned him a drive-through penalty.

The pole position in China is Hamilton's seventh of the season and 13th in 34 races.

His team-mate Heikki Kovalainen could not improve from fifth with his final flying lap of the session, denying McLaren the opportunity to protect Hamilton going into the opening corners.

Red Bull's Mark Webber pulled off the track with his car on fire during the morning's final practice and suffered a 10-place penalty for replacing the engine. That relegated the Australian from sixth to 16th.

  1. sagittarius: I will actually agree with you that is is sad of those who only support him because he is winning. I personally supported him from day one because he was British and an exciting young talent (although he's still my second choice after Button). Turns out he is a even better than I was expecting, but that said I#d still support him if he wasn't.

MikeQ: I got bored, its a 1931 Ford Vicky Street Rod. It was a @#$% up between that, a 1982 Reliant Kitten Hot Rod or a rally cross Rover Metro 6R4 at the time. It'll be changed again at some point.

  3. Well Helen, I guess u r the biggest LH fan here. Whatever. You Britons are full of yourselves. I wish u luck, but it ain't over until the fat lady sings isn't it. I hope Lewis has learnt the lesson, and shows us what he is capable of. But its nevertheless all about you Brits! If I express my opinnion and if I want to make a point on something, why does it hurts you? Is there something about you people that makes the rest less worthy? I know you want to have your champion, it would be great wouldn't it, but lets wait and see. But the FIA politics as well as Ron's(McL) just doesen't feels right! They could have supported Alonso last year , help him with the title, make him a champion and than escort him out of McL. And then, they could work on Hamilton and make him a true superstar! Everyone would have been happy! But no: they saw the chance of raising the the game to a whole different level, Ron simply decided to spit on tradition and unwritten gentlemanship. It came quite @#$% him, innit? That's how it goes when certain persons think they know everything, and there's nothing more to learn. I'll tell U my dear, life is a booberang, everything you do, good or bad, it comes back to you! I honestly hope, this time will be different. I'd love to see a clean start, and a true race! So guys make us proud and show us what you're made of! Let aside team and FIA politics, show us your speed and enjoy it, and let the bast man win today!

  5. I don't understand all of negative feed back about Mr, Hamilton. He's the greatest thing to happen to F1 in some time, without his driving it would be one big bore!! He is what racing should be all about. I love it, keep it up Mr, Hamilton and best wishes.

  8. ginger, by that same token, it's annoying that many people are hitching a ride on hamilton's bandwagon NOT because they know and admire him from all his years in racing, but just because he is winning... that in itself is a sad statement...

  9. What gets me about the criticism of Hamilton is that it is either personal attacks from people who have never met him basing everything on news articles, which any right minded person knows are loaded because bad press sells, or it is the relentlessly uneducated opinions of people who seem to think he can't drive. May I point them to Heikki's position this year, and also to the fact he matched Alonso last year.

  12. To Wizzo: Lewis Hamilton is young, handsome, very rich and is about to become World Champion. I can appreciate if F1 drivers criticise him-at least they know him and are what you would call equals. But most of the people on this page don’t know him, and will never meet him. Most are simply jealous of the guy. Too bad fools...He doesn’t read your comments and will still go on to bigger and better things while you all steam in your own venom!!!
I am glad my cry for help got yours...Go LH!!!

  13. Just to wish all the drivers a safe and exciting race - Good Luck Lewis, you have had to do so much learning these last two years - try to take on board all the good advice and don't get too defiant because it will block your view of that trophy. (Like he's going to listen to me !!!!)
Hope we all can enjoy the race and come back with constructive and sporting comments (like they are going to listen to me !!!!!!)
    Above all else be safe.

  14. I would urge fans to avoid reading posts where most words are in caps as these people who post them have a problem with expressing themselves normally and always put egg on their face instead of the pan or perhaps its a cry for help. That said I wish Ham best of luck,he will need it but not after the first bend leading.

  15. Steve B - An eloquent and well written post. Unfortunately some of the most venomous posts have come from people who have claimed to be F1 fans for a great number of years which makes the comments even more incredulous. I, like you am a fan of Motorsport regardless of whom the eventual winner of a race may be. Yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion but I for one would prefer a civilised forum where decent honest debate can take place. I live in hope.

  16. LEWIS HAMILTON IS YOUNG, HANDSOME, VERY RICH AND IS ABOUT TO BECOME WORLD CHAMPION. I CAN APPRECIATE IF OTHER F1 DRIVERS CRITICISE HIM - AT LEAST THEY KNOW HIM AND ARE WHAT YOU WOULD CALL EQUALS. BUT MOST OF THE PEOPLE ON THIS PAGE DONT KNOW HIM, AND WILL NEVER MEET HIM. MOST OF THEM ARE SIMPLY JEALOUS OF THE GUY. TOO BAD FOOLS...HE DOESN'T READ YOUR COMMENTS AND WILL STILL GO ON TO BIGGER AND BETTER THINGS WHILE YOU ALL STEAM IN YOUR OWN VENOM!!!

  17. What a shame that such an exciting and thrilling sport is tainted by some of the bitterness, nastiness, poor sportsmanship, overt and offensive posts that appear on these pages. In a sport that is marred by conspiracy theories, inconsistent and often unfair decisions, excessive influence of officials and authorities, it is refreshing to see the sporting banter of the true F1 supporters, who appreciate and applaud skilful and entertaining racing whether from their chosen driver or team or their rivals. It is great to read intelligent, well thought out and often funny posts from clearly knowledgeable people. The bitter, hateful comments are made by the same old cronies visiting these pages, spewing their vicious bile to provoke reaction. Thank heavens they are shouted down by the sensible, responsible majority here. If they are starved of the attention and responses they crave, perhaps they will take their filth elsewhere and the enjoyment of the informed racing debate on these pages will be enhanced. Practice times and qualifying mean little if not carried over into the race. Nothing is certain, anything can happen. There are drivers/teams/owners whose outward attitudes might **** us off. What does that really count for in the scheme of things? I was fortunate enough to be at Silverstone, where supporters of all teams were united in their enjoyment of the event. Not a hint of the negativity we see here. Regardless of our allegiance, if a rival driver entertains us with his skill and racing prowess and ends up on the top step as a result, good luck to him. Hope its a great race to remember and may the best man win.

  19. moor5454 Thank you for your observations which were much appreciated. I cannot believe the venom spewing from my "so called" F1 fans. I think all they are looking for is a tradgedy to happen, so they can say "I told you so" These people are not F1 fans, motorsport fans, or indeed fans of anyone who is prepared to go out there and do something to test their own limits in whatever field.(I think using the word field might have confused some of them!) I wish the idiots would go away,to allow informative debate.

  20. "baldyman74" i do agree with you about him, as I met him in Istanbul and I must say he's a great chapp. I was talking about his comments whenever he'd be punished for the wrong moves. He's always complaining that he's been the one damaged, and whenever he does the damage, he claims that there's nothing wrong with the thing he'd done!
