Champions League - Torres ruled out of Lyon clash

Fernando Torres has been ruled out of Liverpool's Champions League clash with Lyon with a calf injury.

But there was better news for Rafa Benitez concerning Steven Gerrard, who took part in Monday's training session.

Torres missed Saturday's defeat at Sunderland after picking up the knock while on international duty with Spain.

England midfielder Gerrard also missed the 1-0 reverse on Wearside with a groin injury, again sustained on duty for his country.

Rafa Benitez's side want to arrest a run of three straight defeats in all competitions, and need to get their Group E campaign back on track after losing 2-0 to Fiorentina on Matchday 2.

They are also well off the pace in the Premier League following their controversial reverse at the weekend, their fourth loss in nine games.

  9. Liverpool should get Garry Megson, or Martin­ O'Neil. Someone that knows how to play to their­ best ability with what they have. Unlike Rafa, who­ somehow manages to implement a rotation policy when­ Liverpool's squad is so thin. I mean, come on!­ Spearing?!!! The guy looks like he's killed 10 guys­ and been to jail for drug possession. Lucas is average,­ but I think he will get better with experience, like­ Anderson for Man Utd. And seriously, Liverpool need a­ decent winger. Benayoun is great against teams in the­ bottom half. But when he plays the likes of Man Utd,­ Chelsea, Arsenal...he is nowhere. All this talk about­ David Silva is going to waste, buy they guy, splash the­ cash and Liverpool will get results. Also, a decent­ centreback to cover for Carragher, Kolo Toure would­ have been great, or Lescott.

Torres76...sorry to say that your team played so badly­ that all possible drama after the game is taken away­ because Sunderland deserved to win, meaning that the­ goal actually has no significance. If Man Utd were in­ the same position, Fergie wouldn't be going mental.­ Just slightly upset that we couldn't keep a clean­ sheet in a 5-1 victory.
