Premier League - Managers: Hughes backs Wiley

Eurosport - Sun, 18 Oct 18:27:00 2009

Manchester City boss Mark Hughes had no complaints over Alan Wiley's fitness, but thought his side deserved a penalty in the 1-1 draw at Wigan Athletic.

Wigan 1-1 Manchester City

Roberto Martinez: "We were playing against a very talented side and I felt we stopped them from playing.

"Going down to 10 men probably gave them a reason to get very solid behind the ball. It was a very entertaining game between two teams who wanted to win.

"I felt in every department we deserved to win but I'm very happy with the performance.

"We've created a great environment here and that's important. Hopefully we'll fulfil our potential soon."

Mark Hughes: "I thought it (Maynor Figueroa's challenge on Shaun Wright-Phillips) was a nailed-on penalty but in fairness to Mr Wiley he was right on the spot and had kept up with play.

"He had the opportunity to make a good decision but maybe in his defence he though the defender had knocked the ball into touch when in fact it was Wright-Phillips.

"It was an obvious penalty but these things happen very fast. I have no criticism of Alan Wiley's athleticism today.

"There are some good teams in the Premier League this year. There is a focus on ourselves because we have the ambition to have a good season. But the fact there is a threat to the teams who have had those top four places is adding extra pressure.

"You just sense maybe that feeling of invincibility is no longer there. Other teams think they can take points off them."

Blackburn 3-2 Burnley

Sam Allardyce: "First and foremost we did it for ourselves but also for the fans who were magnificent today. It was a wonderful performance and a wonderful result coming from behind.

"There were some quality goals. It's a great three points considering it's a local derby and that our next two fixtures are Manchester United and Chelsea away.

"Those two fixtures are going to be difficult but we have 10 points now.

"We've kept David (Dunn) fit which was the most important thing and he's given some terrific performances in a position we didn't think we'd find him in.

"It makes it very difficult for our other three strikers to get a game now. He was terrific."

Owen Coyle: "I was convinced that (Franco) Di Santo had moved into Stephen Jordan (for the first goal) and did enough to put Brian Jensen off. That was my initial thought and you won't convince me otherwise.

"Those marginal decisions are going against us. But referees do the job to the best of their ability and I am not going to get caught up in that. We just have to get on with it.

"We got off to a great start and it was a terrific goal from Robbie then we conceded some soft goals.

"We have scored two goals but got no points. However that away win is around the corner - we will continue to play on the front foot as that is what our fans deserve."

  1. Hughes is even @#$% a provocation. Overpriced and overhyped football club and team. There's only ONE team in Manchester and that's UNITED!

  2. I have no criticism of Alan Wiley's athleticism today.

Would suggest this comment is more to do with having a pop at Ferguson than an appreciation of the referee.

Give it up Sparky. Win something - several things, really - then you can mix it with Fergie. Liked you as a player but I think you've got a lot to learn as a manager!

  6. How long before Sparky gets the vote of confidence?
How can he have spent so much money and not be beating teams like Wigan?
If you look at his team sheet, it's now a mixture of old rubbish and new rubbish (possible exceptions being Given and Tevez, but £25m for Lescott speaks volumes).

  14. Thanks Jono: Like you I know what effect the Munich Air Crash had on the whole City of Manchester not just the United half. Nice to know there are decent city fans out there who deplore this stuff as much as we Reds do. I had the pleaure of seeing Frank Swift play ina testimonial juist moths before he lost his life at Munich, he was still a great goalkeeper then and my Dad, a lifelong United fan, reckoned he was the best in the World after he resumed playing again after the war. His only rival was Lev Yashin, The Black Cat of Moscow Dynamo and Russia and he was the most agile goalie I ever saw in the days before maximum fitness and careful diets..

MU/MCFC and the city of manchester were also effected and devastated by death in that dreadful crash. These morons probably don't come from manchester at all... using fake ID's, say it all really.
