Serie A - Roma round on 'disgraceful' ref

Eurosport - Mon, 19 Oct 16:13:00 2009

Roma coach Claudio Ranieri, defender Philippe Mexes and technical director Bruno Conti have slammed referee Roberto Rossetti after the 2-1 Serie A defeat at Milan.

Roma, who had led through Jeremy Menez's third-minute strike, were overrun by the Rossoneri in the second half but fumed at the decision to award the hosts a penalty, although Nicolas Burdisso did seem to trip Ronaldinho in the area.

But their real gripe was with Rossetti's decision to wave play on during the first half when Thiago Silva clearly pulled Menez back as the Frenchman raced clean through on goal.

"The whole thing was disgraceful," Ranieri told Sky Italia afterwards. "I really hope the penalty on Ronaldinho was valid, because there were a couple we should have had too. Looking at the footage, it looks as if Burdisso got the ball. It's difficult to tell, but the ball clearly changes direction.

"As for the one on Menez, Thiago Silva clearly hauls him back by the shoulder. I don't know where the referee was positioned, but Thiago did a very smart foul there and it might've been difficult to spot from that angle.

"I don't believe [Massimo] Ambrosini should have been sent off either, so the referee had a bad night. The referee can have a bad night, it happens, everyone saw it, and next time he'll do better. There's no anger."

France centre-half Mexes agreed with his boss on the decisions, although pointed to a poor second-half performance as the reason for the loss.

"We are angry, even if we got the second half all wrong. We knew Milan would attack and we responded badly," Mexes said.

"Then there are the incidents that don't depend on us but on the people who make decisions and should therefore be competent.

"Before Burdisso's foul there was also one on me. Anyway the problems came from our attitude in the second half."

Conti went so far as to accuse Rossetti of "disrespecting" Roma's fans.

"I think there was a lack of respect for our fans who came here," he complained.

"He denied Menez that penalty, and we are not okay with the one Milan got.

"We had prepared well and had a great first half. That penalty was glaring."

  3. It was match deciding moment, Roma would have penalty and would be possibly 2:0 up, game done, 3 points... instead of having lost with zero points.

However, Milan's penalty... not sure if that was a faul, but it wasnt on Ronaldinho, it was Nesta. Guy who 'fauled' - Burdisso, should know much better not to dive in tackle like that. It's Nesta with ball, he's a centre back, he hasnt got as much skill to take you on, just stay on your feet, he won't get pass you, he can't turn you, he'll have to pass the ball...

No... cos you are an Inter flop, rush of blood... you still think like Interista against Milanista and have no common sense... Roma will get you on loan as R. Sensi won't give any money for proper players.

I can go on and on and on...

    Forza Roma
