Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole will see a specialist later this week amid fears he could be sidelined for months.
The 21-year-old was carried off with a knee injury during Saturday's 1-0 Barclays Premier League victory over Liverpool and the early indications are he suffered ligament damage. Tests later this week will determine the extent of the injury, and whether or not it is the medial or cruciate ligament which has been affected.
The latter is the more serious, and that could see the former Middlesbrough and Wigan man sidelined until well into the new year.
Manager Steve Bruce will keep his fingers cross over his £6million summer signing, who has been a big hit since his move to Wearside.
However, Bruce has at least had better news of striker Kenwyne Jones, who was also carried from the field on a stretcher at the weekend.
The 25-year-old Trinidad and Tobago international was taken straight to hospital after twisting an ankle, but was released and unlike Cattermole, has a chance of making Saturday's trip to Birmingham.

no-one likes to see any footballer carried off on a stretcher let alone two on the same day and from the sameside He will be a miss ,as will Jones, but we have strength in depth and hopefully the younger players will rise to the challenge led by some of the slightly older players to show them the way.
The Catt is going to be a big miss but i think Henderson can do a good job in there, he's lively and not afraid to get stuck in. get well soon Catt

Malcolm old chap,
That rubber beachball has provided your strikers with more assists this season than cattermole, you wont miss him.........
Great shame for the Lad, he was just starting to make his mark in the team and show his true worth to the side. Hope it isnt too serious and he gets back to full fitness very soon.
