Dunne backs Young for South Africa

Richard Dunne believes his Aston Villa team-mate Ashley Young is a certainty for Fabio Capello's 2010 World Cup squad.

Winger Young suffered a setback when he was left out by Capello for England's recent qualifiers with Ukraine in Dnipro and Belarus at Wembley. But he responded by setting up both goals in Villa's 2-1 home win over high-flying Chelsea at Villa Park on Saturday to keep Martin O'Neill's side on course for a European spot.

And Dunne, who scored Villa's opener, is confident Young - and Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor - will be on the plane to South Africa in June.

The former Manchester City defender told Press Association Sport: "I can see Ashley getting back in the England squad. By the time the World Cup comes around in June, he will be in the squad, himself and Gabby.

"It is a big squad, the England squad, and it is a tough one to get into to but those two have definitely got the ability to get in it. As a defender, I know from previous seasons when trying to defend the kind of balls that Ashley puts into the box, that it is very difficult to deal with.

Dunne added: "Ashley should also take heart from Gabby being left out of the previous England squads and then coming back in for the last one."

  2. Nooooooooooo current form??? Sean you obviously don’t watch Ashley Young play football. His work rate is fantastic as he is not only causing problems up front (Setting up the ‘TWO GOALS’ against CHELSEA) but also gets back to help out in defense. As for not scoring goals, which I think is what you are trying to say, well the goals will come. He is still young (not his name) and learning. He usually has two defenders on him which he is now trying to adjust his game to out wit them. Once he has worked on his timing I’m sure that he will not only setup goals for the forwards and our two brilliant centre backs but for himself too. Remember it is a long season and we don’t want all the players to be at their peak now and falloff like last season. We want to see the team mature into a very strong team to compete with the best teams (having already beaten Liverpool and Chelsea) but also difficult teams to play against like Wolves on Saturday. o
